Of course you know what happens when you assume :o

Yeah, we're not allowed to say it hear :joke: !!! I guess if they don't bother to mention it, and seem to want me to pull a dr. out of the air I'll tell them where to find their dr. :joke: .....

It is just occuring to me, I'll have to ask this question to the 3 doctors I know :duh: LOL

"Keep in mind too, that you should have one picked before you give birth because the hospital will ask you who your pediatrician is, and they will call that doctor's office when you have your baby. The doctor, or another doctor from their office, will come to the hospital to check your baby out before you leave"

I haven't been told anything like that, I assumed my delivering doctor/the hospital would do that!!

IME, the hospital would notify whomever you choose as the careprovider for your children/family. If you don't specifically have a pediatrician, then it would be your family doctor. My family doctor was my care provider for my first pregnancy & birth, and so she discharged both myself and my baby. When I had a midwife in hospital, then she discharged me (in consult with the resident ob), and the resident pediatrician discharged baby. When I had my third at home, the midwives simply notified my family doctor of the birth and I transferred from midwifery care back to my family doctor after a few weeks postpartum. :)

I think ER nurses are generally a good source for finding out who the better doctors are....since they get to see them all in action from time to time......however, I'm not sure if they're allowed to give the heads up like that in most hospitals.

i was actually recomended my childres dr by my obgyn...he said he was the best and i agree..unfortunatly the guys has been around along time and is retiring! the new dr taking his place has been in practice with him awhile but i still hate loosing "our"dr...good luck holly!

Hhhmmm, maybe that's just how they do it in Denver! I had a different doctor (ob/gyn) with each of my pregnancies, and they both told me to be sure to have a pediatrician picked out and have their name with me at the hospital, because the hospital would call them to have them come see the baby after delivery.

The hospital did ask me for my pediatricians name, both times, when I checked in. And they called my Peds office to let them know when I delivered. My girls ped was not the doctor on call when they were born, but a doctor from her office came the next day to see us at the hospital. My older daughter was slightly jaundiced at birth, so the doctor told me that they wanted to see her before her normal two week appointment when he came to see her.

The hospital does do a whole bunch of tests on your baby after they're born, like bloodwork and all that, but they're not pediatricians. You need to have a pediatrician look at the baby after birth too.

Ask your OB, i'm sure they'll know...

Another thing to consider if you're going with the "I can always switch if I don't like him/her"...The Dreaded New Patient Fee!!! Don't know how it is there, but here in NC you can expect to pay an extra $100+ first time in! ZOINKS! :thud:

If you know any nurses ask them. When I had my first I was new to town..and a new nurse. I had my first child early..before I'd had a chance to ask about pediatricians. So when they asked me after I delivered I said the only name's I'd heard and that was my husband's ped from when he was a kid...the whole family took thier kids to her. Boy that was a mistake. I did not see eye to eye with her on a lot of things, and finally pulled my kids out of the practice when my second child (youngest) was 6 months. I transfered then to the family practice guy I went to and I was happier about how he treated them than she did.
Ask around and do your homework early, just in case you have the baby early. I delivered on the Friday before I was scheduled to start my Lamaze class on Monday, too.

Wow, luckily we don't have that for whatever reason!!! I'm still considering just going back to the family doctor I was seeing before the pregnancy. She was pretty young, and I felt very comfortable with her. I never felt rushed, or like I was asking too many questions. She just left the office we were seeing her at before so hopefully she'll need some "new" patients.
