I've been reading a lot on how flakes can have a low nutrient value and thought that, maybe, pellets would be a good solution to that.

I've recently started feeding my Boesmani Rainbow Hikari cichlid pellets that are very very small (rainbows have small throats despite their big size) and i've since added a couple feedings of them during the week.

I noticed within a week that my rainbows coloured up a bunch!

Are pellets just plain better for fish than flakefood?

My feeding rotation is like this:

2x Hikari Cichlid pellets a week
2x Hagen Tropical Fish Flakes
2x Hagen Brineshrimp flakes
1x Daphnea ...

There is no real order to my feeding rotation ... It's whatever I feel like at the time but I feed them twice with each thing and once a week frozen Daphnea ...

When I feed them Daphnea I also throw in a couple algae tabs for my boesmani -- They love it =)

Does that sound good?

Ohya,

every 2-3 days I feed my cory bottom feeder pellets and my boesmani like to claim one for themselves (i have six cory so I drop 3 pellets every couple days for the cory..)

Just curious =)
I've shown good results but I was wondering if there was room for improvement? I don't feed fresh veggies anymore because it was giving me a snail problem =( i was hoping the algae tabs would be enough green.

I'd say go with both flakes and pellets, as well as the other foods you are using. Variety is better than choosing one type of food over another. Even if the food is the best of its kind, it will still be deficient of something. So, like with us, eating a wide variety of foods is the best way to ensure complete nutrition.

I personally feed close to 20 different types of food, including flakes, pellets, freeze-dried, frozen, fresh, raw, wafers, veggies, live. But I'm kind of obsessive about things :p:

I dont think that pellets are better than flakes or flakes better than pellets But different brands are better than others. I usually try to use foods that have nutritional value as well ad vit A vit C Vit B12 etc I think they are more nutricious and better for the fishies health. When you buy food compare the nutrirional values.

Aye, it's possible that the fish just like the variety in their diet. Also consider that different brands of flakes will have different ingredients. I use spirulina flakes, tropical flakes, sinking shrimp pellets, spirulina pellets, and freeze dried tube worms myself.

RE flakes, I've become a staunch supporter of Omega One products. They are not only concientious fishermen, but also create the freshest, healthiest product with only the most necessary additives. They have veggie and spirulina flakes (which contain prerequisite amounts of fresh fish proteins), excellent higher protein foods, as well as those which aid in coloring up, naturally. Don't normally "advertise" products but I even emailed them and was very impressed. Just an FYI. ~~renee ;)
