Penguin 330 spilling over the middle

Dunno about the 330, but my 170 and 125's both mention something about a "spillway" designed to alert you that it's time to maintence the filter....

In fact, they have the manual for them on-line upon further looking. Here's the exact wording:
When filtered through a clean cartridge, water returns to the aquarium via the BIO-Wheel Spillway (Fig. 10a). As dirt collects on the filter cartridge, the cartridge gradually becomes clogged and water flow slows.Water begins to f low from the area around the Intake Tube (Fig.10b).When this occurs, the cartridge needs to be replaced. Improper water flow. Time for a cartridge change.

Hehehe I told you that you should have gotten an aquaclear instead :) My walmart aqua-tech 30-60, which is the same as a penguin without the biowheel, does have spillover in the middle as well. I think the probably is because of restricted waterflow through the filterpads. I have an airstone + small bag of fluval biomax rings in the front part of the basin and that probably is what's causing mine to spill... I should make my own filter pads with foam and maybe that might help...the plastic grille on the pads probably does not help.

When I saw you had the last reply, I figured it was going to be about telling me I should have got an aquaclear :p. Even with nothing at all in the filter mine still over flows. Did you pick up that tank from chris smith yet? If so, how do you like the emperor 400? I got an emperor 400 about 25 or so days ago from phatboy on predatoryfish.net, and I already broke a part on it, but its not an important part so it doesnt matter. I got a good deal too, I traded it for an aquaclear 150 and a 200.

Yep, got the tank on Saturday... I didn't get the emp400...he had a ac200 laying around that I got for cheap :) One of the guys at pets unlimited is going to try to start a fish club here in F'ton... I think the first meeting will be in late Oct.

if it does this even with the filter pad removed it may be pumping more water than its rated for or the filter isn't level/seated well on the aquarium.

hm.. this is funny. my new 55g filter is a whisper60 and its doing the same thing...that trickling from it doing thats irritates me when i try to sleep
