I used to have Eclipse systems with the Bio-Wheel in 1997 and 1998 or so. They worked great. I wandered into a pet store for the first time in ages the other day and I ran into a Penguin 350 filter, which seems to include the same Bio-Wheel as the Eclipses. This may be a bit of a stupid question, but what do I need to get besides the filter? Will it fit into any size and shape of tank I buy? Then what do I need besides the tank itself... lighting? Heater? It was all included in the Eclipse system, and probably still is... would it be too hard for a beginner to set it all up separately?

Depends on the setup you want. here's some basics, but you should fish around online for more specifics

a Penguin 350 would be good for a 40-55 gallon tank. I know it'll fit a standard rectangular, but i'm not sure about a hex.

If you want to keep tropical fish, then you'd need a heater, a 150-200 watt would be good for a 40-55 gallon, visitherm is a good brand. If you're just going to have fish, aeration is good, so buy a pump, airline tubing and an air diffuser.

Get water conditioners, Amquel and Novaqua work well together and pick up a siphon with a gravel vaccuum, and a net or two.

You can pick up these supplies plus alot more for good prices online at Drs Fosters & Smith or That Fish Place.
