I know that the Marineland Penguin is the filter I'm going to use, but now I'm wondering if perhaps the 350 might be too much for this tank. I know someone who runs a 200 on his 29G, but I like the idea of 10X+ overturn through the filter. I just don't want to turn my tank into a jacuzzi.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking a combination of:

1 Pearl Gourami
10 Neon Tetras
6 Pandy Cories
1-2 snails

Or something of that sort. I'm still not sure about which schooling fish I'm going to choose. Rasboras might go there instead.

I have that exact setup, though different fish.
The side of the tank the filter is on has a pretty solid current near the front glass and across the top, but the other half of the tank is fairly calm, i think it'd be fine.
Especially with some decently sized plants or rocks or decorations to break up the current.

I was thinking that too. Some larger driftwood or rock pieces would act to break up the linear current coming out of the filter.

Hopefully I'll also be able to keep some plants in there too, although I'm planning on going a more low-light route.

Thank you for the replies! They're most helpful.

It is not a problem.

I'm running 2x Penguin 200's om both my 20 and 29. No problems!

Current seems to be strongest at the very top, plants down below sway a bit, but nothing too bad.

Don't seem to bother the fishies any; danios in the 29 like to swim in the current...

Cool. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I was afraid I'd bought the wrong filter.

And like you say, I could always do some things to moderate the outflow to reduce turbulence. Although it sounds like I'm not going to have much of a problem with that.
