Penguin 350 on a 29G tank too much?

I think you will be fine with the penguin 350 on a 29 gallon tank. I have that same filter on a 25 gallon tank and all the fish and live plants are as happy as can be. I don't think there is too much current in the tank either. Better to have more filteration then not enough.

Good to go..:dance2:

I believe gouramis like more peaceful water, but the other fish should be fine with the current. You can likely carve out a peaceful area with your aquascaping to give the gourami some tranquility.

Once again, thank you everyone for the informative replies.

I like the idea of high filtration, but was afraid I'd erred toward too much current. But I think I can make some adjustments with the aquascaping to provide relief for the gourami.

Plus, I just bought a Coralife FW CF 1x65 fixture, which should give me a little more leeway when it comes to plants. I'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 lumens/sq. inch of surface area. Which is in the moderate high range.

So with some taller plants, I can break up the flow further. Now I'm hoping I didn't over do it with the lighting and I'll have to get a CO2 generator.

65w over a 29g? you may be able to get away with no co2, i'd say you'd want a DIY co2 at the least though depending on your plant setup.

Hmm. I thought that might be the case. I think I'll try to get slow growth plants and try avoid CO2. But if it becomes a problem, then I'll look into DIY CO2 systems.

I would actually suggest the emperor 280 or 400 over the penguin just because both of those sit lower on the tank. I mean the outlet for the water is lower and causes less disturbance. Also, and I can't speak for the 280, but the 400 has adjustable water flow. So you can set it to a desired setting.

I have a 65 watt Coralife above my 29 gal a Rena xp1-250GPH and 2-Penguin 660R- 170GPH each powerheads for a RUGF. I dose K and some excel and keep med- low light plants- see my sig, I have populated my other tanks at least twice overv and qt lots more than that. Love my set up as it is.

So you do have to use some ferts, but no CO2 setup? Very nice. Do you find that the Coralife fixture gives you a little more leeway in your plant selection?
