I'm setting up a new freshwater planted 90-gallon tank. Is there any significant difference between the Penguin BIO-Wheel 350 or the Emperor 400? I will be pairing up two filters, not sure if the Emperor is worth the extra money over the Penguin...

i have a Penguin BIO-Wheel 350 on my 60 gal and it works beautifuly i dont have any experiance with the emporers but i dont see why the penguin wouldnt do just as good

You won't be able to run it during the day or you'll lose too much co2. I'm in that boat right now. Fixing to go with a eheim.

I have the Emperor 400 and it works great. I have not used the Penguin but have seen several posts on this site that people would have wished they bought the Emperor 400 instead. I will look for them and if I find them I will post a link to them. With the Emperor 400 you have the option for 4 media trays (2 per side). This is a great feature. I think if you are buying two of them that you cant lose with either one.

Check out e-bay or Al's online - you can get some great prices on either of these filters.

The real difference is the way the biowheel is turned between the two filters. The emperor uses a spray bar to turn the biowheel and unless the spray bar gets clogged, the biowheel will turn indefinately. The penguin on the other hand uses water current + gravity to get the wheel to turn. Sometimes if your water level is not high enough or you get any sort of gunk on the impellor the wheel might stop turning. The emperor is basicly the higher end model of the biowheel series by marineland. With regular maintanance, the problems I mentioned should not occur.

Edit: If you want a planted tank with a biowheel, go with the penguin not the emperor. The spray bar on the emperor allows more airation of the water and will quickly get rid of any CO2 in the water.

Bah, I disagree with rrkss!

[teasing!]

I'd get the Emporer, planted tank or no. I have both the 350 and the 400 and I've seen no difference in surface aeration between the two of them. Both are adjustable in that manner. On the 350 you pull up the intake tube, on the 400, you push down the grey thingy thing in the middle :o

The Emporer's bonus is the spray bar turning the biowheel instead of the water flow only.
