Penguin 660R Powerheads: Vibration, Noise, Poor Fit & Design (?)

I use the 1100 for driving the RUGF and the 660 s for circulation and surface agitation. Maybe I am just lucky. Mine are absolutely silent. Weird.

The 550 I use for CO2 dispersion is dead silent. the only sound that it makes is when a bubble of CO2 hits it and gets broken up into thousands of bubbles. Or when I lower the tank water and I forget to turn it off. (Water sprays everywhere)

How many of the 1100s do you use per tank - how high up are they? I wonder if I changed my 660s to the 1100 if I would have any better luck with the RUGF - I doubt it would make that much difference.

I've got 3 of the 660R's, and like most everyone else, mine are silent unless they are aerating, then you can hear the air.
On my Emperor 400's, I've found that if the impeller isn't properly seated in the pockets which hold the bearings, it can make noise and vibration.
What I do is use a drop of dishwashing detergent to lubricate the rubber caps on the ends of the bearings, which allows the parts to slide together and find the best alignment. Otherwise, the bearings can sometimes cock sideways and put a slight bind on the axle, also perhaps allowing the impeller and/or magnet to rub.
Be sure to rinse everything before putting the powerheads into your tank .

ditto rb, I have 7 660r's, mine are quiet. Several times I've removed one and forgot it was still running til I disconnected it from the RUGF tube!

I find I have to purge them for a few seconds on initial starup to clear the air and silence the rattle, but they stay quiet after.
