Penguin, Aquaclear and Whisper - The Word

I'm disappointed because I thought it would be really cool to have a thread that was like a consumer reports sort of thing.
I understand what it is that you are trying to do with this thread. However, in my opinion, it is impossible. Why? Because this forum is open to everyone in the world that decides to join it.

Let me explain what I am saying like this:

Take a simple question like this. Is the Rena Xp series the quietest canister filter? If you get 1000 Rena Xp owners to reply, 99% of them will say it is the quietest. The other 1%, of course, will say it's not. Now, one could assume that since 99% say it is the quietest that it is indeed the quietest canister filter.

However, what did the 99% compare it to? Do they all own every type and brand of canister filter? Not very likely. Most will not have even owned one other unit at all. Thus, the majority of those that replied "it's the quietest" are merely stating their opinion. An opinion that is based on no comparison whatsoever.

One cannot assume that just because a whole bunch of people say the same thing that it makes it a fact.

Like I said earlier, I understand what you are trying to do. I just don't think it is anywhere close to being possible in a public forum such as this. No offense is meant by this. I hope none will be taken. It's just my opinion.

I agree. I have almost all hob filters. Not all of them, but almost. I just prefer the Whisper or Millennium filters because they are more reliable, quiet, and if you really think about it, they have all of the features needed in a HOB filter. No more or less. You don't need 2 seperate pumps or bio wheels. It is just an extra gimmick, IME. I just like a simple efficent HOB filter, and I get that with these.

It's ALL just opinions in the end. No harm,no foul really.

I started with a Penguin mini on a 10g. It was O.K. but the filter media was/is a PITA to me to deal with. Filter cost was one consideration in changing. Made my own filter replacements with filter sheets but again, PITA. Changed to an Aquaclear 20. I LOVE Aquaclears as most people have said media choice and arrangement is awesome. Easy to break down and clean. I also have a AQ 30 on a 20g high. Sponges last a LONG, LONG time.

I have a 5 gal Mini bow that came with a Whisper mini filter and really like it as well. It's quiet and it's easy to change the filter out. Filter pads are fairly inexpensive as well. You could probably use pot scrubbers in them instead that would last longer. Does a great job.

I prefer Aquaclears over them all though.

Just MY opinions. Not that I was asked! I understand what the original poster was trying to do but it's (to me) kind of a waste of energy seeing as though everyone has fairly strong opinions on filters.....

My two cents

aw heck why not join the fray. :shark: I think the first post was a report... that is, a compilation of statements based on the experience of others, as is the case with the majority of the posts following it. Reports based on the user's experience with a product. Just folks reporting their findings.

I use penguins. I have not had any trouble with the biowheels stopping. I have 2 Tanks and 2 Penguin 350's. One is on a 46 Bowfront and the other is on a 30 XH. I like them both. I have had no noise problems. And just to throw another monkey wrench into the mix I use media I found online. They are just like the whisper media and they are $1.00
each so the media is not expensive and is also customizable.
