Penguin Bio-Wheel filters

in the instruction manual it says that it might stop. This is ok, the bateria is still being delievered to the water, and the water is still flowing. a little rinse while changing the water will get it spinning again.

I could not speak more highly of the bio-wheel. Big fan of it and I use it on all my tanks. I've never had to replace any of them.

Yes, you can just rinse the filter pads off. I do that weekly. I replace the filters every 3 months.

Or you can do what I do. Buy a package of the blue/white sheet filter material. Remove the pad off the cartridge frame, dump the carbon and cut a piece of filter material to fit the frame and rubber band it on the frame with 2 bands. I did this with 2 frames and alternate them. I remove the filter material, rinse it well and re-use it.

That said, I did buy and am now using an Aquaclear 30 for a 20g High tank and like them a LOT better than the mini biowheel I have on my 10g. Don't get me wrong the bio wheels does a great job but I like the AQ better now. I run it with 2 sponges and a 3rd on the intake for pre-filtering.

Make sure when rinsing the filterpads to rinse them in dechlorinated water, not straight tap water, otherwise you'll be killing off a portion of your bacterial filter. (I thought it was worth mentioning, just in case.)

On the bio wheel it doesn't matter, on the AQ it does.
