Penn Plax Cascade filters....

I had a Cascade 1000 on my 55, flow was fine but the one problem cascades have is bypass on the outsides of the baskets. Mine was so bad I had to stuff floss in the sides, that got old real quick. I now have Eheim Classics and will never run another type for my show tank.

I'm not a huge fan of my cascade 1000. I wouldn't use it on anything larger than a 55 gallon.

Agreed, I don't think the OP was planning on it. When I upgrade to a 75gal I am either going to run 2 1000 or 1 1000 and a Sunsun. Haven't decided.

I also had a cascade 1000 on a 55 for a while. The bypass is annoying and after a year the flow didn't seem to be as strong even after multiple cleanings. I'm not a huge fan at all of this model. I replaced it with an eheim 2217 and haven't looked back.

Ummm I never recall seeing this on mine..What does it look like.

In my case it was dead plant matter and shrimp, if the plants and shrimp are on the sides of the baskets then you know you have bypass hence unfiltered Water.

I have the 1200, and although maybe not the top of the line filter, honestly I think it does a decent job. Granted I have a Penguin 350 on the tank with it(72g) bowfront, but it does hold quite a bit of media. My water is clear, so much so that if I didn't know better, I'd swear the tank was empty. And this is with nine 4-5" peacocks. I don't consider the bypass to be a major issue, and it is plenty dirty when I clean it. 4 baskets will hold ALOT of media and allow for many options. I don't use the spray bar, but instead made my own return out of 1/2" CPVC pipe, which slides right into the supplied hose. Eheims are supposed to be good filters(I don't own one), so ultimately it's up to you. Just my .02.

Been using my cascade 1000 for gotta be atleast 7 years. Havent bought 1 replacement part for it yet and its been running 24/7 since. Started out in the 55 gallon now its in my 330gallon. I use it mostly for bio though in the big tank, kept the black sponge in it though, rest is media. Its a GREAT filter imo. I just bought a internal cascade 300 for my baby turtles, I expect zero problems with it.

yeah I've had a cascade 1000 for about 4 years now and I honestly love it. It started on a 55 and is now on a 150, along with an aquaclear 500 HOB and a fluval 405. Gotta say, HATE the fluval, LOVE the Cascade. And as far as bypass goes, my water's always crystal clear, even though I'm very heavily stocked so it can't be that bad. I got a 500 last year for a 29, and my friend has a 700. I do think the smaller models are a bit cheaper in quality. I would stick to 1000, 1200, or 1500 for the future.
