Hi All,

I have a 46g bowfront. I currently have a Penguin 200 Bio-Wheel power filter, but I think I need a larger filter. Does anyone here have a Penn-Plax Cascade power filter? I'm looking at the 300 gph model. Is it quiet? How do you think the biological filtration of the Cascade compares to the Bio-Wheel? I don't have an under gravel filter. Thanks!

Jim Lane

Are you having issues with the penguin? Is the pengguin you have the newer series? The new penguin series is a great filter and IMO nothing beats it besides the Aquaclear. Its hard to tell which of the two is better. I dont think the cascade (decent filter) competes with the penguin however.

The only problem with the cascade that I have is that I cant find empty cartridges for it to use my own media.

I had a Cascade and I got rid of it. The thing was a piece of junk compared to the AquaClear that replaced it, couldn't keep the water clear at all.

Oh no dont buy a whisper, those are junk i've had a few and i never liked them remind me of 1970's filters get a emp or somthing ...i have a emp 280 running on my 20 gallon tank.. and two 400's for my 125 nice filters

How much trouble did you have from a Whisper? I know someone that had 2 model 3s on a 55 gallon since the 1980's. I have started taking care of the tank and all I do is change the Bio-Bags monthly. I never have to clean the impeller or anything and they still have full flow even on low water levels. I leave them on when I do 50% water changes and they have yet to fail. I am not talking about the Tetra models, this is a Willinger Brothers/SecondNature. I do believe that Tetra made them the same, but since Aquaria took over making them, I believe that they are going to change the style of them. That will make them all look like the Advanced 5-15 at Wal Mart. I just never will trust Penguins, Emperors, Millenniums, Cascades, or Aqua Clears. And about them looking old and out dated: Why change something that is perfect?

If you like them then more power to u......i just have a few of them that were givin to me and i didnt like them, the uptake was crap to small ....i do just fine with my emp 400's ...and recently just added a rena xp3 first canister ive had and so far i like it to
