People at petsmart.

This is not a pet smart story but it is a LFS story.
After a customer asked the difference in life span for a figure 8 puffer in freshwater compared to brackish. Which I answered to the best of my ability I am not an expert I just stated the brackish is the preferred conditions and they will live a longer, healthier, life compared to being in freshwater. The guy wanted numbers so I pulled something out of my ***. His reply was well I kept one in complete freshwater for ten years.
The same customer went on to explain he cured ick ( which was described as fin rot) with table salt. Table salt is also what you use to make a brackish set up.
And again the same customer went on to explain how bleach is a general cure all for fish.

Not to long after that I had a guy looking to get rid of a 289 gallon saltwater set up that he no longer takes care of. He said the set up is still running and thing are still living even know he has stopped feeding the fish. He said my tang was being picky and not eating what I was feeding her so I stopped. She started looking sickly so other fish started eating her.
He also stated a larger tank is easier to maintain because it takes care of its self along with 7 foot protein skimmers.

I posted this on another thread, but it seems more appropriate here:

I go to Petco. I wanted to get some tetra glo's (which are only bred green right now) and white-skirted tetras. I thought they'd be a pretty school since they are all the same fish.

I finally tracked down the white skirts and just fell in love with two of them that had a gorgeous pink tint. When I pointed them out to the associate, I was told they were "pink tetra glo's", that glo's "are painted, injected, as embroys" and that the tetras "sometimes come out pink".

In spite of my arguments, he insisted on all of the above and therefore was going to charge me $7.99 for a fish that was $1.59. I was so frustrated and angry that I put down the $100 in merchandise I was ready to buy and walked out. In hindsight, I really wish I had insisted he get out a black light and prove they were glo's (BTW: they were at the opposite end of the display from their glo's) and demanded a manager.

Instead, I went to Petsmart and now have a beautiful school of white skirted and glo tetras. All's well that end's well, I suppose, but this is just one more reason to hate Petco and I'm done giving them anymore chances!!

Yeah I get a little miffed when I go to fish stores sometimes. I see kids ask their parents for the worst combination of fish and want them in a 10g when none of them should even go into a 10g by themselves. I started based on a fish store's advice but made sure after that I started researching and looking into things a bit deeper. It just surprises me many others don't.

That said, I've found a few people who are very interested in what I have to say and actually take my advice on it which, while I don't know everything, is still better advice than they're usually getting at the time based on what they were trying to stock.

Everyone will make their own mistakes I suppose, and sometimes they have to want to learn it. It def. makes me feel nice when the maintenance guys for my apartment complex tell me how nice my tanks are.(I suppose other people in the complexes that keep tanks leave theirs really dirty and nasty)

Yeah I love tank compliments because I take a lot of pride in my fish and tanks. That's why I can't wait to see people's eyes light up when I get my 125g salt tank up and running. On this forum it's an everyday thing but no one I know around here has even seen a 125g tank let alone a salt tank.

Yeah, I'm restoring a 200 gal currently(going to be my frontosa tank) and I can't wait to get it all set up with a 75 gal sump and the stand/canopy I'm going to build for it.

Sometimes I feel like wanting to punch these clowns for my problems. " Yes you can keep a common pleco in a 10g." Yes yes you can keep two honey dwarfs together. :swear:

The common plecos, long with golfish are some of the most abused fish in pet stores(as far as not telling someone the correct housing requirements)
