People pay allot for used Mag 350's

I took apart and cleaned out my other mag 350 today after being in service 5 months as flow was finally starting to slow. As usual although the outer circumference 120 square inch blue-bond can be rinsed and reused and inner circumference polyester polishing battens get so inundated with dirt that they become black and heavy and have to be discarded. I have never seen a polishing pad on my stacked canister Sunsun or Fluval 404 ever get anywhere near this dirty, mostly becasue if they could they would stall and stop flow. The reason why the Magnum can get this dirty and still run is becasue of the substantially larger surface area. While white (now black) poly battens capture all the dirt, the outer blue-bond layer and especially the inner carbon basket house a substantial amount of nutro-bacteria. Mostly because of the carbon which compared to most other boi-media surfaces is substantially more supportive as one teaspoon has a bacteria support area of 57,000 SF or about 1.2 acres. The 120 SI circumference blue-bond & poly-polishing layers coupled with the high flow center bio-carbon basket make this filter a powerhouse, or as some say work-horse.

I know this thread is a little old, but I have to brag... I got mine for $1. A LPS was closing down, and they had marked that one at a dollar for the filter by itself. The baskets and the micron filter were separate, but also only $1 a piece. Now if I can only figure out how to use it properly... lol. I want to get it setup for my 75g as my crappy HOB is too small for the tank and not moving the water enough, but I don't know how to set up the filter media properly, and I've got to rig up the plumbing. :D Oh well, it's never fun enough unless it's difficult to begin with anyway! ;)

Gunner, let me get this straight. Inside the cannister, you have the blue filter on the outside, then the batting, then the basket filled with carbon? That little basket has always confused me for some reason... (It would help if I had the instructions on the darned thing, lol.) What are the little bags for? Are they your carbon media? Is the blue part on the very outside, or is it that blue piece that slides over the basket?

I'm really sorry to pull the thread off topic. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not clutter the thread.

From the inside out: Carbon inside pantyhose bags and the pantyhose bags inside the carbon basket with remaining voids packed with Polyester wool not batten. Outside the carbon basket a thin layer of polyester batten that has been split in half (thin) and then cut to size for 1st inside layer wraparound against the basket. Then a final layer holding the 1st layer of white split batten against the basket using either the fitted Marine-Land blue bonded filter sock or sew your own Blue-bond sock with dental floss.

Anyway here is a thread that shows how the filter arrangement is on the Mag 350, you can ignore the portion about recharging carbon for repeated use. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193418&highlight=magnum+350

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. :) I'm going to get this set up tonight, I think.
