They do get noisy when the impeller magnet and the shaft it rides on gets worn out and starts to rattle but it takes a long time. As part of a craiglist tank buy I got an old AC300 that had been on a salt tank for years. When I started set it up it sounded like a underwater coffee grinder. After ordering and replacing both the shaft and the impeller magnet ($12 total) it ran silent again just like new. Check the slop between the shaft the impeller magnet hole, you should not have any loose play back and forth, if so you need to replace both.
I had two 70's on my tank and they weren't 'loud' at all. The sound of the cascading water was quite soothing actually. The only problem I had with them was leaking O rings. I had to replace them with a canister.
