My LFS keeps cleaners and peppermint in the same tank. I have 2 peppermint and 1 cleaner in my 75g (no fish yet) and they are fine.
In response to Gildurath's comments:
My peppermints do hang out under rocks during the day but are almost always within sight - often out in the open too. They are quick to come out when I drop some pellets in the tank. At night, one of them does laps back and forth at the front of the tank. All three are willing to crawl up on my hand to "clean" it - day or night. This might change once there are fish in there... but for now, they aren't shy.
Arpy, another fine example of how everything can differ so much. We have exact opposite experience. But yes I do have fish, and I have 1 aggressive fish that lives in my cave network. So that might be why my peppermint are shy.
Once Aiptasia spreads it can be very difficult to control,Especially when you have a large reef system. It happens faster than you would you think.A friend purchased a piece of coral from LFS and it was attached to small rock, after a week he noticed two of them.(very small)He thought they where baby Condi's.after a month they started popping up everywhere around that piece of rock.He started to get worried and called me,to come and take a look. When I saw how much Aiptasia had spread from that tiny piece,I tripped out.Had no Idea it could happen that fast!!He ended up tearing the 125g down because the Aiptasia eventually infested it and killed most of his stock.Mainly his corals.
I am not trying to scare you.I'm just stressing how "FAST" you need to QT that piece and every other piece you see it on.
QT it and kill it,Or get rid of the infected pieces,And PREY it hasnt spread elsewhere.I am always adding something to my 150g reef,But I always QT for 3 or 4 weeks FIRST.I will "STILL" get one slip through every now and then,Aiptasia,Manajo, ect.I use Aiptasia Control(the white stuff)It comes with a small syringe so you can "target"a very small amount onto the head. It's like putting salt on a slug, they just melt away.
I hate putting ANY kind of pesticide in my system. You gotta do what you gotta do.I try to value the "whole" system before the individual,If one has to go to save the rest,so be it.
Peppermints will eat it,but I would need a"LOT"of them to safegaurd my 150g Reef full of LR.LOL.
I keep 2 in my QT tank now.
It's Not friendly if thats what your asking,I didnt say it will stalk down your fish. But if your fish swim into it they will get stung, and it stings corals too.
Yes It can cause damage enough to "kill" livestock.
Before we bring this thread back on to the OP's topic, as its their thread, yes, as stated, an aiptasia can and do sting, however, for this to "kill" a fish, the fish would have to be constantly touching the aiptasia and suffer multiple stings..a simple sting from a glass nem will not kill a fish...
Please, there is nothing to worry about in that respect. Simply use an aiptasia control method, erradicate them from the tank, and simply use a method of control...
Thanks and have a good day and all calm down a little please.
I think I'm going to add 2 peppermint as I don't want to harm the coral they are on. There aren't too many, so hopefully the peppermints will take care of it. Can't get them until tomorrow though, but that is okay. I'd still like to add 2 sexy anemone shrimp, but then I'd have 6 shrimp, 3 different types. Maybe it'll work? Hopefully they all get along.
I have 2 peppermints, a skunk cleaner and a Fire shrimp in a 29 for the last 5 months. I had really bad aiptasia. I bought some Joe's Juice to get of the large ones. I'm assuming the peppermints have eaten the smaller ones because I havn't seen anymore.
