Hello guys! I made an account because I'm about to tear my hair out and the people at the pet store have been less than helpful. My Betta has fin rot, and he keeps getting a little bit better and then it hits him all over again and I'm not sure where I'm making the mistake.

I've attached a pic of my baby Cas and that's what I woke up to this morning. I've been treating him with a week of bettafix but clearly that's not working.

I'm not sure if I should quarantine him into a smaller tank again, he really hated that but it did help him heal the first time. I did a round of daily water changes (75-80%) and aquarium salt and that definitely worked, I was seeing new regrowth. Then it was back to his big heated tank, a week of bettafix to help him heal, and that was going okay until today.

So if I put him in the smaller tank I haven't found a way to heat it, too, it's just a one gallon bowl. Soooo what do I do? Help please! I want him to get better!

Do you have a read for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in PPM?

It's great to see you have done water changes. Lots of water changes and keeping nitrates as low as possible should help.

In terms of meds, I don't have a recommendation there. I do know stores will want to sell you products. You can't blame them there.

I don't :( I'm waiting for the strips to come in the mail. I do know I've been changing the water like crazy but it got bad again when I put the bettafix in for a week. I didn't change the water during that time.

Which might actually be my answer, to go back to doing tons of water changes. That seemed to help the most last time.

I know it's more $, but I would order an API master test kit and keep the test strips as backup. The liquid test kits are more accurate and the kit will last for years.

I would do more frequent water changes and use a good dechlor product like seachem prime.

Oh really? I didn't even know that was an option, thank you! I'll have to look into that.

Okay. That's what I'll do, then, daily water changes. Is changing like 50% going to be enough or do I need to do more? If it's every single day is 50% enough?

Without a liquid test kit, I would do daily 50% WCs, using prime as a dechlor and see if things improve.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

This is probably a stupid question, and I apologize if so, I'm a pretty novice fishkeeper haha! Is there any difference in dechlorinators? Right now I'm just using the topfin one.

The topfin product should be fine. Lots of folks in the hobby like Seachem Prime or the granular form, Safe because not only do they neutralize your tap water's disinfectant, they will also detox ammonia, nitrite and heavy metals. I think you'll find these products also treat the most gallons per bottle as well.

Oh, this is all great information, thank you! I'll use up the bottle of topfin that I have already and then switch over to the prime. You're amazing, thanks!

Hope it helps! Post back to let us know how you make out.
