I went to Pet Smart today and was looking at stands. They had some that looked really good, but on close examination, it looked like they were laminated particle board. Are their stands any good. Do they really hold up and support the weight?

Aquarium stand, likes the ones at Petsmart, are intended to do one thing. Have a aquarium on it. So in other words, if it says aquarium stand, then it will hold up.

i made my own stand.. 50 dollars worth of wood from homedepot and i have the stand i wanted... but pet smart and petco seem to be a little expensive on most of their stands

I've got a nice wood stand now, but I was trying to go with something cheaper for a new tank I'm setting up, though the ones at petsmart aren't that much cheaper.

Unless it is protected in some way a stand will get wet.

Particle board can turn to mush when wet.

Making your own stand is very inexpensive and relatively easy. Using 2 x 4s is cheap but not a requirement.

They also sell the nice wrought iron ones! Most of the time I have seen them sell both the tridational black, or a crome/silver. But either way, IMO wrought iron stands are some of the BEST ones that you can buy!
