Why would you treat a fish that you are not even sure it has any illness... That is the worst advice i have ever heard of(honestly no offense) Meds often will stress a fish to the max and why would you do that if it is not necessary? Quarentine-yes Medicate-NO(unless you know for sure it is ill) I'm all for a quarentine tank or hospital tank because i have 1 but how often do you get fish that are sick from the store? If you answer that with a higher number than once or twice than I would consider shopping elsewhere!!!

My (relatively) new PetSmart is holding up in quality service and nice variety of stock. The employees are still there, enjoy their jobs, and are pretty knowledgeable. I found my Black Ghost Knife Fish there, and a turquoise severum. The lfs's are going downhill in terms of good employees, and my favorite one is phasing out cichlids--nice for now, got some good sale prices; but down the road . . . btw, when I went to PS yesterday, all the tanks had been gravel vacuumed, and fish were happy (except a couple that had come in on Tuesday--there's always going to be some ailing fish from shipping).

i don't have any Petsmarts in my area, but there are 2 PetCo's that i know of, one where i shop for equipment and plants but not fish yet.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote big time. I did not say that at all.

I said: Quarantine all new fish and treat for ich and any other diseases in the QT tank and there is no danger at all to the other fish.

To break it down so that you understand:

Quarantine all new fish. Treat for any diseases that show up in the QT tank where there is no danger to your other fish.

Okay?

Isn't salt cumultative though? It doesn't go away, so each time you add it, wouldn't you just be adding to what's already there?

I've read that it's better to take the fish out for a salt "bath"... I know NOTHING about this.. to take it as a grain of... I'll spare the pun...
No I won't SALT! HA!

Okay sorry I missunderstood... Also I do buy alot of fish from petsmart and i have had lots of luck. I have also bought from petco and had not so much luck. I just got 2 1in sevrums and less than 1 week they had ich. Who knows though? I guess it all depends on the employees they hire right?

Yes, you would. Eventually, if you threw in a sprig of dill weed, you'd have pickles instead of fish.

No. If you have anything in the tank that requires a salt treatment, then *all* of the fish will probably require the salt treatment. Salt is good for treating some parasites and some people have reported success with it's use against some types of fungus.

Good. I will have to hunt you down and spank you if you add salt ;)

The PetSmart in my area is great. They usally have the same people working in the fish area and they all seem to know what they are talking about. I was in the other day and a lady wanted to buy some fish and the person working talked them into getting a different one because the tank she was going to put them in was going to be way to small. She explained everthing and in clear english and seemed as though she really did care. I go there all the time and I think I have only seen 3 dead fish so I point it out and they right away pulled them out. I now by all my fish and fish items there. Another great thing is you can go to there site print out what you want and take it to the store and they price match it. I have saved a few hundred dollars doing this and they have no problem with it.

my feelings are changing towards petsmart. on some things they seem to be cheaper then my local fish stores. i find that my lfs prices keep going up. not only that most are going to the higher end fish. which is nice if your looking for that. i am having a hard time to even find some angels. i think its not only each store is diffrent but the times you go in with diffrent people. one time i went and they put all the fish in the same bag when i asked them to spit them up. the next time i went in the girl got me mad but was semi helpful. she asked my tank size and what was in it. she was saying about not puting to much fish in the tank. it was cool she seemed know what she was talking about. i asked if i could get 4 female and a male. they were platies so not hard. she gave me so much attitude then giving me grif over the other fish i got. one thing i liked was each type of fish got its own bag. over all factor was the tanks looked clean.

I would buy equipment and supplies from Petsmart. Sometimes I buy fish depending on what ones. The Dwarf Gouramis always look like they are only days away from death. However, the more hardy fish have always been just fine. The other problem is the centralized filtration. Which means if one tank has a breakout of an illness then all the tanks are exposed. So my general rule is get equipment and supplies from Petsmart or Petco and get fish from the privatly owned LFS.
