pet store rant!!

"Salt doesn't cure Ich, it just tightens the scales."

This LFS has been in business for over 30 years, I used to go with my Dad when I was a toddler and he was buying fish. I just recently purchased a 125 from them and yesterday, they were asking how it was going when I picked up my hood. I told them I was treating for Ich in the 55 first before I move them to the 125. Told her I was using salt and heat. She says, "you must not have had Ich, because salt won't cure it....just tightens the scales."

:thud:

When I pointed out ich on the fish in one of the tanks, "No that's not ich, those fish always have those little white specks.". Yes this store has central filtration, and no I didn't buy any fish :)

The worst advice that I was given when I first started out was that 16 goroumis would be perfectly happy in a 55g tank. They fought all the time. I came here, did some reading and took all of them back except 2 gold ones. I still have them.

Another one. I asked why he was squeezing the fish before putting them in the bag. I was told that the air in the bag and the air in the tank was different, you have to squeeze some of the air out of them before you put them in the bag or they will die on the way home.

This isn't the worst thing I've been told, but it's the most recent ;)
I went to a 'SuperPet' petstore today for the first time, because I need some iodide for my new shrimp and the store happened to be on the way home. They don't carry marine products so they didn't have the iodide. Rather than just say so, the guy behind the fish counter spent ten minutes explaining to me that if I keep my aquarium clean and balanced (implying that I probably don't, which irritated me), the shrimp won't need iodide to help them molt. That's like saying as long as the air in your home is clean, you won't need a sweater to keep warm - it made no sense to me at all. Some LFS employees just don't seem to get it; I'd rather they say they don't have something, or don't know something, than profess to understand something they clearly don't.

 OK, tons of bad advice in this thread, but so far this one takes the cake.

I bet if you kick the crap out of a puppy he won't poop in your car on the way home either.

Worst LFS advice I ever had was someone trying to talk me into a SW tank when I was looking to buy a new tank for FW. I simply left and went and bought the tank at another store.

as per my LFS, this is how you clean a fish tank....
1) net all the fish (this is a 10 gal tank, BTW) and put them in a gallon bucket with tank water
2)empty every bit of water out of the tank, wash the gravel, the sides, wash everything that is in the tank, and give the filter a good scrubbing, replace ALL the individual filters
3) fill the tank back up with water and dechlor drops, and put all the fish back.
4)all you have to do for maintenence is scrape the algae off the sides, and do that cleaning every few months when "you feel it needs a cleaning"
5)and if for some REALLY WIERD REASON, you need to do a water change, dont bother putting dechlor drops in the new water, the dechlor that you used in the old water will be enough

wost advice i every got was from a store called something fishy they told me a rope fish and 3 indesent sharks would fit in my ten

There are some "painted glass fish" i beleive.. they look like crap, clear tetra like fish with ugly neone dye dow their back and belly. Aparently thoes fish often have alergic reactions to the dye, which causes them to get clumps of little white, almost ich looking things on their fins. Ive been told it isnt contagious to other fish. I doubt this was the case at that pet store, but i guess there are some ich looking things that arent nactually ich
