Hello, I am looking into opening a pet store. I need info on possible expectations for a buisiness plan. Any info would be appreciated. I live in a town of about 75,000. Three store's in town, none with good location or any kind of customer service. Thanks in advance.

There is a forum somewhere dedicated to opening and operating fish (or possibly pet) stores. I can't remember where but I was recently on it. Try a yahoo or google search or maybe someone on here will be able to tell you what the site is called.

There is a store here in Jacksonville that is selling franchise opportunities. This is one of the best lfs here. I don't know if you would be interested, but here is a link to their site.

Here's a site that may give you a couple of ideas...

thanks for the reply, I had read that article previously but i appreciate it. It is supprising to me that there is not more on the web about running a small buisiness pet shop. oh well, thank again.

All I will say is that if you are to open a LFS which isn't run by higher ups or chain stores, then expect it to be an uphill battle...because it is for most I talk to.

You need to remember quality over price. I'm probably going to hate myself for saying this, but focus more on the quality of your pet store supplies than making everything "cheap". While the average 'joe' would like cheap prices, the more experienced of fishkeepers understand that with cheap prices, comes cheap quality. This could mean dead fish, broken products from shipping, and the overall poor health of your animals being sold.

...So, make sure that your products are nice looking, and good brands. Make sure you find a breeder who is serious about providing top of the line fish...or at least close to it. Nobody is perfect, and no animal is perfect but remember that there are always the "other" stores out there, and you have to do better then the competitors! ;)

also create a clientel before you start the store do self advertising, go out and talk to people and find out if they have fish and see what they like about stores in your area and what they do not.

And quality over price.
there is a LFS by me who has higher prices than all other LFS and pet stores but they have such a nice looking store, they always have tons of people buying fish and supplies.

Big Al's.
Although I think you're require C$750,000 for the complete setup (building, stock, franchise)

I might be going out on a limb here, but I dont think this poster is intending to copy cat big als...

...Big als has a lot of nothing. By that, I mean they have a lot of the same products, which do slightly different things and while they do have some nice things, I wouldn't think most pet stores would have the room to put all that stuff in their stores.
