pet stores in your area

About 20-30 minutes (walk and subway time) from my place there's a city block with NOTHING but fish stores...store after store selling nothing but fish and aquaria products. Some have really nice planted displays on sale...already aquascaped.

As for prices, I don't know any other general pet stores that sell fish to compare them to, but I got 3 Cory's and 6 Guppies plus a fish net for $6. The prices don't seem too bad...though the Java Moss they sold me was expensive as all getout...($10 for a decent clump that filled about half my tank when I loosened it up).

I have lots of stores around me, petco and petsmart are the main ones. There is a local store, Whitie's that is a general pet store, but very very good for fish. There is one fish store that i know off, but surprisingly enough they have no idea what they are talking about, and are way to expensive, plus their store is virtually empty.

I visit two stores that I would consider fish stores in my area, The Pet Shanty and Ocean Gallery II (ok, they have some retiles and inverts as well, but the overwhelming focus is fish). Both are actually down the road from Shark Aquarium, though I've never made it up there yet.

The selection of livestock totally destroys the competition provided by Petco/Petsmarts and other such chains. Pet Shanty also offers price breaks for volume buys on schooling fishes, which is a good incentive for buying them in groups. Also, the knowledge of the employees is like night and day when compared to chain petstores. The people working at these more specialized shops know what they're talking about and are passionate about fish (at least that's been my experience).

i only have ONE petstore where the owner actualy knows whats hes doing. He breeds arowanas for crying out loud!

will never buy from petsmart again asked the girl workin when they would get in more convicts she asked what they looked like and she pointed out every striped fishe in the store and said while thoses are convicts to

these are the 2 I was talking about that were just up the highway about a half-hour. Maybe actually 15-20 minutes up. Both great places IMO as well.

I have 2 stores I tend to go to here, both local shops. we also have the 'usual suspects' (petsmart and superpetz), but I won't buy fish there if i can help it. the staff at the LFS's are much more knowledgeable and at one store they actually persuaded me to NOT buy fish once! (at the time I had a tank set up that day and wanted to put fish in it without any kind of cycling... :duh: )

LFS>chain pet store

Plenty of good Fish/Aquarium specialty stores around here.. about 10 within 20minutes driving, they each seem to have their advantages and disadvantages. The big concern for me, is getting my equipment at a reasonable price and having any legitimate warranty claims honoured with no drama (last thing I want is to have a heater or pump fail and have to wait while it's sent back to the distributor). The other thing I really like is stores that stock quality brands rather than just the budget products.
