petco $1/gallon sale

you really want a list?? ;)

Most any local pet store I can visit will stock them, or can get them within a week.

Mail-order sure. Locally? You must live in mom & pet store central to actually see them in stock.

R & J Enterprises is a big one for mail-order "all-wood" stands. Looks like one for a 55g is ~$279. About 2x the price of an MDF stand.

I guess it depends on perspective, I haven't lived anywhere else in the US to compare and there are some awesome aquarium stores back home too.

Another thing would be how far you're prepared to drive too.

I also think that there are stores that aren't big box pet chains and aren't mom+pop stores either.

for example, That Pet Place is around 2 hours drive from me, they have many real wood stands in stock.

If you want smaller, Kockout Aquatics is just up the road, Ultra Corals + Fish is a smidge further; Both often have real wooden stands in stock, I could walk to either if I weren't so lazy.

:) I guess I am a little spoiled for choice when it comes to aquarium stores that I can get to in an average shopping trip, but how far afield have you looked?

I expect you should have a somewhat local aquarium society (Maybe Erie County?) , look through their list of local sponsors, see if there's anything close and then take a trip and make a day of it... take a cooler just in case.

IME, the stores that care enough about the hobby to support local clubs, care enough about the fish to stock what dry goods and equipment will work the best, not necessarily what is cheapest. Which for stands will generally mean solid wood or iron stands.

If you're ever around North Jersey, I could even give a few places to try, depending on your interests.

Got a few places down this way that either stock them or atleast can get them if you ask, but yeah big box stores only stock the cheap pressboard.

Yeah you're going to pay if you want solid wood but thats the case with any type of furniture when it comes to press vs solid.

They have changed most of their aquariums from Aqueon to Tetra.
I just picked up a 40b for my basement and I'm here to warn you to inspect the tanks before hand, the first 3 I picked up had defects, the first one had a major chip in the bottom corner, I assume from mishandling, and the next 2 had uneven glass where the corners didn't match up very well on the back panel.

Also the way they stack them up leaves all the plastic frames scuffed up, not a big deal, but a chip is, and uneven glass worries me too.

The silicone looks a bit sloppy too, but that doesn't really bother me.
I got one and might pick up another if I get a chance before the sale ends.
I hope to find a double stand for them.

Yeah, you have to watch for flaws all the time at big box-o-pets. I hastily picked up a "Great Value" 20L from Petsmart when my 29g cracked. There's chips on the glass edges of this 20L that are just buried in the silicone. Probably won't pose a problem, but still.

I did some poking around months back on who makes standard off the shelf tanks. Basically there's two companies that make them all. Central Garden and Pet (Aqueon) or United Pet Group (Marineland/Tetra, etc).

Went on a roadtrip on Saturday, and stopped at 3 decent-sized pet/fish stores. All 3 had pine stands in stock.

The Hidden Reef (Levittown PA)
The Fish Factory (Bristol PA)
and
Pets Plus of Delran (Delran NJ)

2 of the 3 stores were independent, 1 was part of a smaller local chain.

I didn't pay attention to prices for the most part, but I'm pretty sure that I did see a black pine stand for a 40B for ~$150 (At the hidden reef)

So it's definitely possible to go out and buy real wood stands. ;)

.

I just picked up a 29g using this sale. The sticker on mine says Aqueon $58.99 so I'm pretty stoked! Also gravel is onsale as well so I got 2 20lb bags for 13 bucks each. Btw the petco I used is in Hamilton NJ

I'm thinking of getting a 75 gallon but I'm not sure because of the extra work involved going from a 34 to a 75...

Unless they changed the rules 75's aren't in the $1 sale, my local petco's dont even carry 75's. Petsmarts the only box store here with larger then 55.

Yeah sorry, I'm looking at a CL item. But I think it's just to big for me. $125 for almost new tank, stand, hood and lights would be great buy though.
