Petco aquariums

I popped into my local Petco on the way home from work this evening to check out the tanks. They had all the advertised sale sizes. I had a serious urge to pick up a 29g. I resisted and bailed. The Tetra/Marineland tanks didn't look bad, but I do like the bigger frames better on Aqueon 55s. I haven't compared glass Versa-Tops, but I'm pretty sure need to make sure you're buying Versa-Tops intended for Tetra/Marineland/Perfecto and not for Aqueon due to fitment differences.

A week or so back I succumbed to the urge and picked up a Petco (Tetra/Marineland) 29g. It's not really $1/gal in my area, because the stores charge you sales tax based on the normal retail price, then discount it, so the 29 is more like $35 out the door. LOL.

The tank has got your typical sloppy comsumer grade silicone job, but the glass is lined up nicely and there's no other issues that I could find. One thing I find interesting after setting it up is, the glass doesn't bow to the degree that the first 29g I owned did. The first one was a black siliconed Top-Fin 29 that came with a 'Top-Fin kit'. That tank eventually cracked diagonally across the back and Tsunami'd the floor on me out of the blue. I believe that tank was a Marineland product as well.

I've got one 10 gallon that is running. No problems there. I bought two more tens to harvest the glass for some Metaframes I am restoring. Taking apart the Tetra is a pain. There are nice tight joints that resist a blade going through them. I really doubt these seams would split. As has been noted however the 10 is not as deep as a regular ten. Means I have to cut another piece of glass for the side panels of my restoration. Good part is the leftover glass becomes tank covers. Bad part I have to buy yet another tank.

I've got 59 tanks from various makers. The Tetra tanks are not as good as some and better than others. I'd buy more but 59 is enough.

Honestly never cared enough to notice a difference, I guess. The last few tanks I've purchased have been Tetras through the $/gallon sale.

I've never been a fan of most of Tetras hardware-type products though.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but last week I just bought a standard 55g Aqueon through Pet Supplies Plus $1 per gallon sale. I was going to get one from Petco, but it seemed I had missed their sale by a week or two. Pet Supplies Plus website said they had one going, so I stopped in. They had 3 55g's sitting stacked on the floor. The first one had a cracked rim which I pointed out to them. I took all the packaging off of the one I bought and inspected it thoroughly before purchasing. Its much heavier than I expected, but seems decent quality. I suspect the one that had a cracked rim probably wasn't handled with care.

The $1/gallon is with the card. No card you pay full price. Same as Petco.
