We went to Petco today and couldn't resist temptation to but a couple of pieces of driftwood that they had in a Koi tank already sunken. I think we paid like $3.49 each for them. The catch--they have a type of algae all over them. I think it's a type of black algae, but I could be wrong. I haven't really checked it out much. I would have liked to check it out there at the store, but the "fish guy" would not let me touch it and it was super dark in the tank that it was in. Still, we brought it home. Is there any chance of me killing this algae and not having it come back? It's nice looking wood and it doesn't even float so I hope so!

If you have a pot big enough you could boil it too.... The bleach would work but I wouldnt mix up too stout of a mixture to soak it in as it will absorb alot of it and might take a few soakings in heavy dechlorinated water to help reduce it.

Don't mess around with black algae. Bleach it well, then boil the bleach out of it.

Thank you all! I think I'll bleach, scrub, bleach, boil with salt, scrub, boil without salt and then soak in an overdose of prime. I will also check out that link--thank you Darryl. When bleaching do I use the 19 parts water and 1 part bleach solution? Also, how long do I leave the wood in the bleach--just a quick dip or soak? I was looking it over last night, but I still can't tell what it is because it's pretty much the color of the wood. I think it probably is going to have to be submerged to see it and I haven't had a chance to tend to it yet. I really hope this driftwood doesn't mess up anything in my tank.

take a look at the article in my sig. the prep stuff in there will pretty much get rid of ANYTHING on the outside of the wood.

Thanks Jon. I actually have that article saved in my favs. Totally forgot about it though. Driftwood duties to come after work. For some reason, I'm not looking forward to it. :|
