Petco driftwood...

scrubbing driftwood isnt bad.. scrubbing an empty tank will get me every time though. lol.

This may sound simplistic and to some extent duplicate previous posts.

As the pieces which you describe will "fit into a large pot" then

1) Place the pieces into a large pot and fill 3/4 of the pot with tap water;

2) Bring the water to a boil;

3) Add Clorox until you get a whiff of the chlorine odor;

4) Turn the heat to as low as the burner will allow;

5) Fill the pot almost to brim full with tap water;

6) Allow the wood to soak in the warm chlorine solution for 24 hours;

7) Empty the chlorinated water and replace with tap water and dechlorinate and then cover the pot and set on warm;

8) Repeat 7) above for 3 days and

9) Allow the wood to cool and place in your tank along with dechlorinate.

This algorithm may be way overkill but the above described protocol is the one which I accomplished when I last added driftwood to my tank.

Two additional items:

1) The above may be way, way overkill as indicated above but I do not enjoy dead fishies and

2) Even with the above when I placed an air diffusion disk under the driftwood tannins appeared in my sump for several weeks.

Thanks for all the help. I took Jones approach, to an extent. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed, then I boiled in bleach water, then I soaked in heavily dechlorinated water, and then I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed some more and then stuck it back into my 5 gallon bucket of heavily dechlorinated water for a day and then boiled it in salt water, rinsed, scrubbed, rinsed, boiled in plain ol' water, soaked a few days in a bucket of fresh heavily dechlorinated water. There seemed to be no tannins in the bucket of water so I think it's good to go. Here's my after shots--I didn't take before shots... ew. LoL.

All in all, I think it cleaned up nice and I'm comfortable with sticking it in my tank. However, does anyone know what type of driftwood it is?

Petco usually carries Malaysian driftwood/bogwood. they do occassionally carry mopani..but that is not mopani ;)
it does look similar the pieces I got from them.

As long as it is certainly tank safe, I'm good with whatever type it is. I was suckered into buying NOT SO Aquatic plants from Petco so now I'm very leary of the things I buy there or any other chain stores for that matter.

nice pieces, i was thinking of getting one or 2 small ones for my tank but the petco near me.. their soaked driftwood/plant section is HORRIBLE.. The plant tank is over infested with algae, you cannot even see the plants through the glass because its soo green and no i dont mean the glass is green (well that 2) but the plants are covered in a thick slimy,furry green/blue coat of algae. And the driftwood tank is so so same experience as you a few algae here and there.. Since you were able to clean it good i might drop by there and pick up a piece.

Yeah, that's exactly how my Petco plant/sunken driftwood tanks are. The driftwood was definitely slimy and furry and gross, but it cleaned up very nicely. I have to admit, I might go back for a couple more pieces. It seems to be the cheapest in my area. A lot of work to clean it, but it's nice wood.
It's good to know that it's Malaysian. Thanks guys! Ya'll are awesome!

cough cough ask them to knock down the price cough cough :silly:

yea it surely is cheap. Small for $3, medium/large for $5-8. And they have some "plants" if you want to call them that.. attached to some pieces and thats $8. Not bad considering another store charges $15 for a tiny piece.

Anyone know if Malaysian discolors the water like mopani does?? I had mopani and i hated the brown water.
