Petco Finally Liberates Betta from Cups

That's how they live... each claims a small territory, and sticks with it. That's why they don't all kill each other in the wild.

They keep them in small cups because they can breath air from the surface

Sure, they put them in the cups for that reason, but also to save space I would imagine. The only thing is...they then STACK the cups on top of eachother.

I have a female sorority tank and I absolutley love it. Four of them are sisters - pink with red fins. Beautiful! I found them on aquabid. I have one other in there who is unrelated but does just fine. Two others had to be moved to other tanks because they couldn't play nice. No surprise - one was actually a short finned male who had been sold from the female tank at a local store!!!
Glad to hear some of the Petcos are figuring out the community thing. I wish my Petsmart here would!

Back to the blue water...I don't know about other places, but I worked for PetSmart for a while not too long ago, and policy was that the bettas get a water change on delivery (also every Monday and Friday..which Fri was conveniently delivery day so all the bettas were done at once), and the blue came from using those pre-formulated Jungle fizzing dechlorinator tabs (which have a bluing agent in them) that do a 5 gallon bucket at a time...you'd fill up the bucket, pop the tab (because employees can't be trusted to accurately measure a liquid dechlor), change out 5 gallons worth of betta cups, and repeat. We had Quick Cure in the back, but that was specifically for the quarantine tanks, the bettas never got treated with anything more than those Jungle de-chlor tabs unless they were also in back, in quarantine.

Justahannah;

Petsmart uses quarantine tanks? Before selling fish?

That impresses me- a lot of stores unfortunately don't- they put fish for sale straight into tanks and let the buyer get stung by any die-offs and problems.

The lfs I go to keeps bettas in tanks in the breeder traps for males, as well as in quart mason jars. They also have female tanks that usually have another fish and plants in them. They clean the water daily, and give great advise on what is normally considered to be a compatible tankmate for them with the caution that there are some fish that don't conform to the norm. They also ask what size tank they are going in and what is there already. They will also make sure you know what pleanty of hiding spaces realy means by showing you one of the show tanks. It doesn't matter what time of day, or what day it is either. They are always willing to give each customer as much information as they need, and give helpful suggestions to those seeking advise. I do however have one favorite clerk who is the manager of the store. If I get someone else they usually go to him for answers to my questions. I usually do research on my own as well, but it's nice to know that some sucessful stores care enough about the care of the fish to be able to educate their customers without fear of losing out on sales.
