Petco moving in the right direction?

where abouts is that petco?
 
the petco near my grandmother (I lived in that area over the summer) is very well maintained. The bettas are never stacked as far as I saw, and none of the large fish tanks are over crowded. They also use quarentine (sp?) tanks for the first week or two after they recieve a shipment to make sure all of the new fish are healthy and dont contaminate other tanks, which means that they almost never have illness problems.

I love that place :)
 
knowledgable staff?

no petcos in ohio.local kmart had nice bettas in larger containers and due to the fact the worker was a avid fish keeper(she had 4 x 55 gal tanks plus at her house). anyways she said her biggest problems were the people supplying the store. also she said kids would go back when noone was around and dump tons of fish food in the betta containers(all those bigger containers wont help with that scenario). well as a serious fish keeper(since1995) i too get upset to see unknowledgable staff...

Oh yeah, knowledgable staff? I wanted so badly to say something the last time I was there, but I didn't. These guys were getting their water tested and the petcrap guy was like, "Yeah you have high nitrites. Let me show you what to buy." So he took them over and showed them the various chemicals to detoxify the nitrite. "Yeah anything that says it'll get rid of nitrite or nitrate is pretty much what you need."

So what was wrong with that scene? Well, did he ask them anything at all about their tank? No. How long was it running for? What were they keeping in it? Had they previously cycled it?

Did he instruct them as to why their nitrites might be so high? Explain to them anything at all regarding what steps to take as far as water changes, adding bio-spira, etc? Nope. Instead he just handed them some chemicals and was like, "yeah that'll take care of it."

Feh.
 
You get what you pay for....

Chain LFS are notoriously lousy payers therefor, for the 3 bucks an hour (or whatever the min. wage is) you get a kid. Not to say that all young people are bad or unknowledgeable, but alas the majority have not a clue...They are not payed to be knowledgeable, they are paid to scoop fish and sell products.
