Ok well my Petco used to have an awesome selection and quality of fish up untill about 8 months ago. I asumed things went down hill because there fish expert had left and they just had fill ins working in the department till they hired someone new to take over. Well they finally hired a new guy who seems to have somewhat of clue as to what hes doing but the tanks still look horid. I was there last night and I finally asked one of the managers who I know who the heck supplies them there fish because they are awefull lately. They had just received there new shipment at 10:00 am and half of the fish where dead. You should have seen the tub full of them it was disgusting. He told me it was seagrees farms from cali who I thought was a very reputilble commercial supplier. I assume that all petcos must use them. So my question is has any one else noticed that the fish at petco or the fish the recived from seagress where half dead? What a shame that a supplier would ship such awefull stock. On a side note I drove to our local petsmart which is quite a haul today and the fish looked wonderfull. I hope its not just my local petco that doing a horrible job with fish husbandry. If it is I will be tempted to write a letter of complaint.

mine's the worst place for fish to be (if you remember my topic "Petco...")
I wish i saw a petco that takes good care of fish

You live in CT and your dealer doesn't use these guys? I live about 40 miles west of Danbury and these guys trucks are always on local highways...
Most locally owned LFS's in the Hudson Valley and Catskills use them...

Sadly, like most other wholesalers, they sell "painted" fish too.

Na theres a big local fish distribution center over in West Haven.
Tropical Fish Distributors LLC

Most of the LFS go there or order air from distributors that could be seagress for all I know.

Im not kidding tough I was there an hour after there stock came in it was awefull. Half the stuff was DOA. 4 royal plecos dead that was the worst! I konw it isnt my local petco because after the QT the tanks and medicate for a week the stock looks good.

I have found it frustrating to buy fish locally. Sometimes the stores just don't take very good care of the livestock. Sometimes they get poor livestock. I know one LFS has about 50% of his inventory at home, growing out and quarentine. For example, my LFS tells me he gets several Aftrican Cichlids that are 2" long. If he holds them for a month, they are 3.5-4" long and now worth double. The price (and shipping) on fish closer to maturity is much greater too. He's a new store. He seems to take great care of his fish and knows what he's doing. I hope he stays in business.

They are 1.3 miles apart...

My local Petco's tanks are pretty clean looking and I hardly ever see a dead fish. Maybe once in a blue moon but I'd say they're pretty good actually.

I stopped buying fish from my local Petco because they don't sell healthy fish. The fish are always dieased.

I don't buy fish at the Petco anymore either. Every time I buy fish from there lately, they always die no matter what I do to try and save them. It is just not worth it. I feel sorry for the fish there though. I just do not want to bring those problems home to my tanks.

I used to think I was doing something wrong to make the fish die. But then I started buying fish from better stores and they never died... Which was when I realized Petco sells sucky fish.
