Pets

To keep on topic...

I don't mind people keeping pets, otherwise I would be a hypocrite. A lap dog would not survive on its own so I see no reason for complete animal "liberation"...to an extent. Those caught in the wild I see some problems with keeping, especially those that are threatened species. Animals deserve respect, but I think it stops there.

As said many times before... I see NO problems with keeping pets we understand, for the most part, and can care for properly. I don't think someone should own a dog if they're going to keep it tied out 24/7 with minimal attention and no real life. Nor should someone get a hamster for their kids, stick it in a 15"X20" wire cage until it gets sick and dies, or give it away when "the kids lost interest and stopped caring for it."

I know that I will likely get flamed, but I think that you should have a permit to keep fish. They have to be the most abused species of pet because of ignorance... They may not be like a dog or cat in personality, but they can certainly suffer from neglect.

Pets are amazing parts of many human's live, and they always will be. We have changed so many species too drastically to undo what we've done in any case...

They also give us wonderful topics to debate upon :D

I like to do the opposite of putting clothes on my dogs. I walk them in the nuddie.
See, I'm not the only one...

I won't flame you, bettagurl :)
I posted earlier about the difficulties of using the law to enforce high ethical standards for pet owners. I think, realistically, it would be hard to put a permit system in place. In general, government regulatory systems are controversial, aren't they? The question is always, how much is too much? Where do we draw a line between regulation and intrusion?
But, realism aside, I'd support a strict permit system for all pet owners. Or at least some sort of mandatory training--even if that just means having to read a care sheet and answer some questions (like the quiz you take to get your driver's license in some states). The line between regulation and intrusion is traditionally drawn here: you can have as much personal freedom as possible, to do what you want to do, as long as your actions do not harm others. For me personally, I include animals among those "others." But I know that many people do not conceptualize it that way.

People don't have to have a permit to have kids and some treat their kids like crap too. Animal and human abuse will always happen whether it is regulated or not. Bad people do bad things and don't much care if a permit is required or not.

^I'm not condoning this by any means just making a point.

Basically you guys are all great and anyone who is a member here knows well the affection towards our pets that we share, and equally does not have ridiculous priorities as regards animals.

We all of us love 'em., be they furry, scaley, slimey or otherwise and we are confident in our ability to allow us enjoy them and vice versa.

But, we all learned along the way (speaking as a serial goldfish murderer in my young days).

That's why on this site we will always try and educate, recognise that the fellow member we are talking to shares our common interest, and acknowledge that we have all made mistakes.

Its really no different from our relationship with people, when ya think.

That's about as profound as I get. Also people live longer and can't bite you. Or at least are not technically poisonous :D

Here, here! I work in social services and see the atrocities against children. Some people should not be able to reproduce or own pets!! :swear:
