lol. . . . unless you buy directly from a breeder over in taiwan or something, EVERY betta is shipped that way. prices are low because they can pack more fish into a box with less water weighing it down. it's not like other fish where they can put a bunch into one large bag, ya know? if they were shipped in individual large bags there would be a lot less "betta lovers" like you because their price would probably become prohibitive.
as far as overstocking - most of the time when i visit a petsmart at least half of their cages are empty, awaiting shipments of new animals and reptiles. they don't plan on keeping the pets there for very long, so overcrowding isn't an issue when it's only for a week, or less. in regards to the fish - same thing. feeders go very quickly, so taking a video of the tanks on the day they get all the new fish isn't really accurate as far as showing the average amount that are usually in there. plus they have all kinds of filtration and additional water volume hidden behind the display, so even though the fish are visually in very close quarters, there is a lot more water for them to be in than just the small box that you see. it's like putting 20 mollies into a 10g tank, but having a 50g sump hidden underneath the tank.
It is not impossible to ship in better conditions, allowing more survivors and less stressful conditions for the bettas and their future owners - all the while not breaking the buyer's wallet. Instead of depressing the price of 2 cents per fish, for just the addition of up to $1 will ensure better living & breeding conditions of the fish and everyone including the fish, will be happy. So what if we have to pay an extra dollar or two to ensure happy fish and future headache? This is really NOT much to ask for, and no, that would not lessen the amount of ppl who will become betta lovers. It doesnt take 50 extra dollars to ensure good quality ship and breed so that "price becomes prohibitive." in fact, food, housing and supplies combined, would cost more than that.
And NEWS FLASH! there are also breeders everywhere, not just in Taiwan.
Fish are overstocked in almost all LPS and LFS. I know from ppl who work there that many fish die from overcrowding. literally hundreds of fish die each week, and that may even be an understatement. My point again, I dont understand why they overstock it if they cant sell them in time.
