I was in Petsmart looking for a sponge filter the other day when I overheard a conversation between a customer and two Petsmart employees. Apparently the customer had two tanks at home (with fish in them, not sure on size of tanks or fish), anyway, the Petsmart girl was refusing to sell more than six fish to the customer. Now mind you, I get why the policy is in place but it wouldn't really work very well. If I tried to buy fish for my three tanks, or if I fishless cycled a large tank, I would not be able to buy more than six fish at a time. Also, that means that I can buy six pacus for my 30g but not eight neons for my 75g. :duh: Anyone else ever hear of this policy?

Yeah, petsmart does some pretty crazy things sometimes, I have heard of that policy too but it doesn't make much sense. I understand that it's to help out the hobby and so that fish aren't abused, but people will do whatever they want regardless of any rules. Recently though, at the petsmart here though, I haven't really heard of them enforcing it, maybe they realized it wasn't a very smart policy.

Speaking of Store bought fish...

So, If you want more fish, go back tomorrow? I'd either do that, or, just have my friend with me, and they'll buy 6 fish, and their friend will buy 6 fish, and so on and so on... Thats strange that they do that, but, that's "their" policy I s'pose.

Ever notice at some pet stores, when you want a fish from "Tank A" they take water from "Tank B" and put the fish from "Tank A" into "Tank B" water? I don't want strange water for my newly bought fish! I want the same water the fish is used to! --- This is a ploy right? give them "Ich" water or something, so, the customer will come back cuz... "now, suddenly... my fish have ICH!" Ick!

Has anyone else ever noticed that? or, for that fact ever heard of policies to
sell X amount of fish to 1 person?

It all boils down to the all mighty buck...

most chain stores have a central filtration system and all the tanks are connected with the same water. if one tank has ick, they all might have it. that's why you should always quarentine.

Problem is, I live 70mi from Petsmart so I can't go back tommorrow. I get what they are trying to do... to keep people from fully or overstocking an uncycled tank. The biggest problem that I had with it was that the girl said that the reason why she couldn't sell more than 6 at a time was because it would "stress the fish out".

if they're going to have a policy like that, they should at least understand it fully. the employee's first question should always be "What sized tank do you have?" and the second should be "What kind of fish do you already have in it?" and go from there to determine what kind of fish can go in the tank, and how many should be added at a time.

because i agree, what if someone was buying 6 pacus for their 30g tank. that would be a MUCH bigger problem than 8 neons for a 75g, lol.

Our Petsmart just had a sale on community fish 10 for $10, so that blows the 6 limit.

I've never heard this policy, though I have heard a few of the girls ask what size tank and what type fish were in them.

If my girls aren't working I won't buy fish, usually just buy some food( fish or dog, have 3 dogs ) or plants so its not a total wasted trip.
