Petsmart Fish Policy

It's interesting that no one else has heard of this policy. I wonder if it was put in place by the manager of that particular store.

It is probably that stores particular policy. Can be good in some situations, but definatly not every. The employee's probably don't even know why the policy is there other than it "stresses fish". Fish are super stressed on the trip from the store to the home, but the number of fish doesn't make a difference as long as they don't put too many in one of those little bags.

I worked for PetSmart a few years ago for a few months, and they didn't have a 6 fish policy...

well the weird thing is i have a LFS that has the worst looking tanks, dead fish everywhere. Ich is ravenous in most of the tanks most of the time. i won't even think of buying fish from there. not healthy, way overpriced and the only fish store within a 30 minute drive. I do buy other things from there (if i can't wait for drsfostersmith.com) but the fish are a nightmare. i went to get a 10G grow out tank and they had this puffer in there, GSP, and he was breathing so hard and his stomach was sucken in so badly, he was at the bottom and probably won't make it 2 more days :( and they have filtration set up tank by tank, not linked at all. Most of my fish come from petsmart. the one down here is really a clean place. Employees are a little less than knowledgeable for the most part (i went there one day and wanted 3 clown loaches, so i take the lady over close to the tank and she starts putting the net in the bala shark tank below it and tries to get some bala sharks, had no idea what a clown loach was) but no ich, no diseases and really nice looking fish. so go figure.

P.S. I miss pran

Or you could just not buy from Petsmart :D ANY place with a central filtration system should be avoided (IMO.)

except that it is the ONLY store within a 20 mile radius that has the fish i want, a rather rare fish that i was VERY surprised to find there.

I would NEVER buy fish from petsmart or any big chain store to start with. Oh and what kind of store tell you how much of something you can buy. That is stupid. I would think stores want you to buy. I guess they just will not sell you more than 6 because they do not want your bacteria to get overloaded and then let the ammonia build up and kill your fish since I think they have a long guarrantee. I bought 12 rainbows from a pet store that was like an hour and a half from me and since I did not have a water sample they would not guarrantee the fish, which was fine with me because I was not going to drive 90 minutes just to replace one fish. I would just say if a store refuses to sell you fish, just refuse to give them ANY business in the future.

Spot on... I personally think Petsmart is a joke, but some people have no choice and i respect that. I am lucky i have 5 other very good stores to choose from all within 20 minutes of me here.
