Petsmart, Fish with infection..

as im sure many of you know i've been trying to find out what's wrong with my molly (ive created many threads discussing the problems im having with it.)

today he appeared to have swelling on one side of his head, around the gills with internal bleeding visable. along with his inability to swim properly, it has been concluded that he's got an internal bacterial infection.

i now ask you guys what i should be doing- i bought this fish under 7 days ago (last sunday) and he started showing these signs a few hours after we arrived home.

i would take him back, but i have serious doubts that large chains such as petsmart take the time to treat fish they sell for a dollar each. he'd probably be left to die, which i don't want.

on the other hand, it's not fair i dish out 10 dollars for the medication. should i dispute this with them and try to get some medication?

another problem is that i really don't have the time and energy to be dealing with this atm. surgery soon. do you think a smaller lfs would be willing to take him in and treat him, under the understanding they can sell him after?

worse comes to worse ill fork over the cash and help the little fellow, i suppose. he's cute. :/
 
You know what, about a couple of weeks ago I went to my local Petsmart, and bought 2 guppies, one male fancy guppy, and the other a female. That night (maybe one hour into being into the tank) it died, just stopped swimming, and went stiff. I looked at him for a while and noticed that when I first got him, it looked like somethin from his last tank in Petsmart was nipping at his fins, they were all torn up. The female practically suffered the same fate 2 days later. I believe that there might have been something wrong in that one guppy tank they have in Petsmart. So I know where your coming from on this one...what to do about it, I have no clue. :o

well as far as thier return policy goes you have 14 days to return them dead or alive- i understand not wanting to throw him to the dogs- what agout salt and a high temp it is for fish what a fever is to us - so i hear- if he's not too far gone he might be able to fight it off. Mollys like salty water so i hear and it's good for any ailing fish so i'd put some in and from all the info i've gathered any salt will do as long as it doesn't have any caking agents in it.

he's definately a fighter, his swimming is completely back to normal today and his gill doesnt seem to bother him. i think ill wait it out. the salt idea was a good one, unfortunately i cant because of his tankmates.
 
What fish are in with him? Many fish respond really well to a salt treatment...

hurricane, i have a betta, african dwarf frog and a ghost shrimp in there with him. today i'll be adding some schooling tetras I have yet to decide on the type.
 
Watch it, mollies like to tear bettas up if you're not careful.

Petsmarts do have "sick tanks" in which they use stuff like Quick Cure and General Cure.

Basically crap that doesn't work.

You are going to add new fish to a tank with a diseased fish in it?
 
Yes. He has been in contact with other fish for a week now and none of them are sick, which leads me to believe it's not contagious. However, it will not be today and likely in a few more days (due to another unrelated issue)
