Ok, so I am deciding to give my ground skink some variety so I want to give him some mealworms. What sizes do they have at petsmart? I need small ones but online i can only by the small and mini ones (1/4-1/2'') in counts of 1000.
Buy the regulars and see if it can eat it. It should be able to. I've seen blue skinks eat huge 2in fat moths no problem. And large adults can easily take them down.
Have you thought of breeding mealworms and other kinds of worms or crickets?
You can also catch bugs from your yard, if you don't use chemicals on it and feed them that.
Mealworms are lacking nutritionally. They are the porkrinds of the feeder world. :grinno:
The larger ones are probably Zophobas which are the larvae of a beetle. The are higher in fat, better nutritionally, and better from a "Chitin to guts ratio" perspective. :thm:
I would give my skink super worms but they are WAY to big. To put this in perspective, ground skinks (Scincella lateralis), grow between 3-5". Mine is about 4.5 inches long. I am not planing to give him mealworms as a staple, just an occasional snack. If the mealworms get to big, I have some cichlids who would gladly take them of my hands!
