Based in the info I got here last week, I used crushed coral. Instead of tossing it into the tank, I made a filter bag of it and put it in a Whisper 40 filter. That filter had the sponge element and the coral in it now. The other end of the tank has an AquaClear 300.
If the pH starts to get too high, I can just shut down the Whisper filter, reduce it's flow rate, or reduce the amount of coral used.
I decided not to just toss the coral into the tank because if I got too much, it would be a major pain to get it back out after it mixed in with the gravel.
