Phantom fish deaths

Women.....=) just kidding. I mean that stuff would be benificial if you have an ammonia spike but dosing the tank for no reason, i assume, wouldnt have a positive impact. Interesting indeed. The only two causes for the nitrate is either youre kits are playing up. Or youre tank inst cycling due to ammonia reducing chemicals but the missus would have to be constantly be dosing the tank which i guess would make.the nitrogen process unable to occour. Not to sure but seems logical to me. Benificial bacteria would be my next move. Really useful stuff imo. I use that when ever i start tanks and do water changes. Says it helps start the nitrogen process. Sorry for the lengthy replies. Just tryna give you some info.

thats fine mate, and thanks for taking the time to explain to me. She has said she has only used it twice, on a couple weeks back and one within a month of setting the tank up ( still cycling) combine that eith the addition of my new fish maybe the cycle has stalled and wont restart?

Not to sure hey, its tricky, even with having dosed the tank. There should be signs of one of the three chemicals. If anything the new additions would have helped to kick start the tank. I read that some cities water may have double the chlorine/chloramine in which-case would impact the beneficial bacteria, dont know how plausible that is but something i found, also mineral levels. But i dont think it would be that conplicated. I reckon bombing the tank with beneficial bacteria is the way to go. That way if/when youre tank is hit with ammonia it should be sweet. Especially if youre adding more fish.

ok i will give this a go, chlorine levels arent bad here, i use seven trent, they provide some of the cleanest possible water with as little chemical treatment as possible, chlorine test are all clear on the tank too, but none the less, I will give the bacteria bomb a go

Cheers

Came home tonight to find a guppy dead, did a water test all the levels are fine, nitrates are still at 5ppm, had a good hard look at my tank and found that one of my painted ornaments were blistering and a few blisters had been pulled off by something (assuming a fish) this ornament was brought from an aquatic shop and was supposed to be aquarium safe.... Could this have been the cause the whole time? I have now removed this suspect and I am hoping that this will fix the problem, assuming that this paint was not aquarium safe and the paint is toxic I will need to do a few water changes to rectify the damage caused.

If anyone can offer any input I would really appreciate it.

Dan

When in doubt, do waterchanges. Do the fish have any signs of fin clamping or gasping at the surface?

Howdy, its a plus that you have nitrates in youre tank. Good sign of tank cycling. As for the ornament. take it back and complain. say it killed 3 guppies and you may score a freebie :) But yeah that doesnt sound right with the ornament. stick it to em i say

I took this ornomant back over the weekend complained to the manager explaining that i had two flying fox's die two dwarf gourmet 1 kissing gourmet a clown loach and 4 or 5 guppies. I walked away with a birthing tank, fry food and 8 female guppies. Worth the trip I suppose
