I got a new minnow trap, and I finally got around to trying it out!
Most of my minnow traps are the old school wire kind, like this...
You put bait in the trap, put the halves together, and sink it. There are funnels at either end, with one inch or so openings.
However, I picked up this NEW minnow trap, to see what I might catch different. This is the medium Promar collapsible minnow trap.
It is mesh, instead of wire. The openings are much larger, but held closed by strings. This allows the fish to push in, but not out. There is a little pocket for bait at the top, and the zipper at the bottom releases the catch. So, I put it in a spot I knew had plenty of small sunnies, to see of the fish would still fall for this kind of trap, since they actually have to push through the fabric a bit.
Well, it definitely worked, and I got my young sunnies, but I do believe one fish was confused by the term "MINNOW trap"...
Caught two kinds of sunnies in the trap. Pumpkinseed, which I have caught here before, and Green, which was a new one for me (assuming I am IDing correctly, of course).
A pumpkinseed.
And a Green
Pulled all those guys out and tossed them back in the water, so I could deal with the big boy. I only brought my small bucket, lol...
Looks like a nice sized yellow bullhead!
Chubby little gal! She was really chill though. If I had a spare 75 laying around, I would have been tempted to keep her!
Also saw some other critters...
A tufted titmouse
A wood turtle
And of course, many crayfish. They just LOVE me...
