what would be the best moss/fern/etc to try on this log? (it's resin.) must be turtle-friendly, and it'd be nice if it didn't totally take over the tank lol

so the log is always going to be out of the water?

(I'm just asking for other's benefit..... I have no idea)

yeah, it's a floating "log" for basking. it's hollow, with holes on both sides for entry. i'm thinking i might also consider putting some of whatever on the end of the basking ramp on the right, too >.> (though that part is always underwater.)

also, lighting is only a UVB light and a basking light.

For that purpose, I'd look at terrestial mosses instead of aquatic ones that you can obtain locally.. or inexpensively. I'd browse through some of our paladarium threads and photos for those suggestions. Many aquatic mosses also grow emersed, but java wouldn't work very well and other premium mosses would be pricey if that cute little turtle decides to start snacking. It's going to grow a lot bigger, too.

ty ^_^

i know he/she is. depending on the growth rate, that tank should last about a year, and i'm already looking at what upgrading would entail. i'm not planning on keeping him forever, just until he can fend for himself. (he's wild-caught; i dug him up accidentally while he was hibernating in my garden. with the sheer amount of herons and eagles living along the shoreline behind me, he wouldn't stand a chance out there.)

out of curiousity, then, what aquatic mosses would grow emersed?
