I found a DIY trickle filter article online and I was gonna try my hand at it. My mom works for the local school lunchroom and brings home 5 gal pickle buckets all the time my. My question is, do you think that using these buckets instead of purchesing new ones would be harmfull? I have rinsed them several times and they still reek of pickles. I was planning on soaking them in some water for a few days to hopefully remove the smell, I just dont want to end up with a fish tank that smells like a kosher dill. Or even worse end up killing my fish.
Any ideas?

You'll never get the smell out of those thing. As far as being fish safe, I have no idea. Why risk it when you can get a brand new, clean bucket for about 5 bucks? Not worth the risk IMO.

I wouldn't risk it. IMO, it's not worth it. They can be cleaned, but for the amount of time/effort it takes to clean it(and possibly the cost of the chemicals, lol), why not just buy a bucket?

I have access to pickle buckets as well and use them for a lot of stuff. To get the smell out I use about half a gallon of bleach to the 5gallon bucket. I fill it up all the way to the rim with very hot water then let it sit for at least 5 hours. It will still be there a little but very little. I can't see how it can be harmful the only thing that would be a bit odd is the preservatives but most fish food use preservatives as well.

just buy a fermentation bucket for beer..

Baking soda and water mix will take the smell out, its what we use on the boat my uncle charters to get the fish smell out the fishboxs and coolers, just let it sit for a day or two as like a paste buckets covered if possible.

Thanks for all the help im gonna the bakingsoda and water fix and if that doesnt work maybe the bleach. But maybe in the long run ill just buy the buckets. It never hurts to give it a try. Hey they're free!!:grinyes:

They're PICKLES. Tough for me to imagine how something so delicious could harm fish.

Bleach will take care of the smell, for sure.
