Pics of my new Sids (Dwarf loach / chain loach / Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki)

I'm very interested in dwarf loaches... never see them around here though- and couldn't afford them even if I did! :(

As for substrate- I'm using a natural looking play sand- but in research I found the coloured play sand by crayola sold at Walmart is safe for aquariums

I did STRONGLY consider the purple sand because I intend to get Red cherry shrimp and the purple would have helped bring out the colour. (and of their fish tankmates).

I did instead go for the natural look- and hope the shrimp will forgive me for having a light-coloured substrate! (plenty of shade and hiding spots and dark slate caves).

Anyhow- back on topic with the loaches... they truly are a fantastic find- one of the best looking fish around.

Now hurry up and breed them so I can buy some off you.

Hey Dawg and others. There are sids currently for sale on AB for $5.00 buy it now. $4.00 if you bid and no one else does. That Pet Place also has them all the time for $9.99. Good luck !

Thanks everyone.

Wycco - From what I hear the sids are not easily bred in captivity which is why the price is usually up there. I'll see what I can do though...;)
None of the records involving private aquarium spawnings by these particular fish were through efforts. All cases shown were only nature's work or accidental.:)

Dawg, you cannot beat me, not allowed. I've been babysitting my 42 sids for over a year now. I keep telling them to hurry up, but they just want worms, no lectures!:)

Two interesting observations so far with such a large group....I have 6 aneus cories in there who spawn.....large spawns.

Sids are extremely avid egg eaters to the point where they will push their faces into the spawning fishes vent to be first to get the eggs. Me thinks they will heartily eat their own eggs too!

Out of the large group that I have, only 3 or 4 have taken on a very different, matronly (big bertha) type of physique.

I'm wondering if perhaps the male/female ratio is at horrible odds, possibly due to them being products of hormone induced spawns, and I'm thinking no wonder nobody gets any young, most people don't have a female in their little group and don't even know it.

I have witnessed twice in the past couple of months a very different kind of a frenzy going on in the tank under the dimly lit parts of the tank where very large crypt usteriana leaves are tall enough to float over the surface of the water and hang down. Both times my biggest bertha was right in the midst of it.

Reseach continues......:)

Well... after saying I never see them around here- saw them in Petsmart today- $10.99 each.

Still cycling so didn't get them... wonderfull loach. Tempting to get some... shame they're so expensive though.
