I had been working in the tank earlier and a little while ago I walked through the kitchen and heard a loud *crack* and I looked down to discover that I had stepped on a Malaysian Trumpet snail and popped its shell in half. So...feeling bad, I threw it into the tank with the ever-hungry yoyo loach so that she'd eat him quickly.

When the MTS dropped to the bottom, the loach was sniffing it around and the pictus came up and (like the greedy hog it is) swallowed the whole snail, shell and all.

I mean, that won't digest, right? Is the pictus doomed to some sort of internal backup/tears? Never seen it eat anything hard like that before. The snail was about 1/2 - 2/3" long....

I love my pictus

I have been unable to keep MTSs in my tank with pictus cats. when they were smaller, there were a few surviving snails, but only the largest of the MTS's no babies at all. I originally thought there was something slowing or stopping reproduction, but reproduction is good in all other tanks. these days I add all of the MTs I can produce in my other three tanks, and still cannot get a colony going. And I find few empty shells from the MTS's. I would surmise the catfish eat them whole and can process the shells somehow. The cichlids do not even attempt to eat them, but will sort around them and eat the rams and pond snails whenever I feed snails to the tank. no surviving snails, no shells laying around when I vaccum, and I feed volumes of snails to this tank.

Hmm... Thanks.

Daveedka, that is interesting. Looking at a very hard shell like that (I mean, it didn't crack immediately when I stepped on it; hard little bugger!) I can't see how it can get through...ahem....the pictus' other end. But hopefully you are correct. If he's still alright in a few days I'll let you know!
