Pirahna Feeding

I have 6 pirahna in a 55 gal tank and I have been feeding them rosy reds as well as the occasional goldfish. The other day I ran across some frozen mice in the pet store which were parasite free and checked for all that good stuff. It said on teh packaging that it was meant for reptiles but I was wondering if this would be alright to feed to my fish?? Thanks

Thank you for answering my question. I was asking about feeding not about wether or not to keep my fish.
 
I know this is off topic, but have you ever thought of breeding guppies for your piranha. They have less fat which can be better for your piranha's health!

I would also think that frozen mice might make a lot of excess waste for nothing. I would stick with guppies and try to feed them some frozen foods.

Pygocentrus nattereri, the red bellied piranha, grows to about 12 inches and a 55 gallon tank is far too small for 6 of them. with excellent filtration (you'll need a filter capable of turning over about 400 gph), and a minimum of 50-65 percent water changes on a weekly basis (due to the extreme mess of live feeding), a 150 gallon tank would be more like what would be needed to maintain your fish.
 
You probably shouldt feed the mice to them. Mamallian fats differ from fish fats and are not good for fish. Of course pirhanna are opportunistic preditors/scavengers in the wild, but you should be feeding them The best foods possible. On that note, feeder fish are not the best option unless you want to raise them yourself(you did not say if you do or not, so this is just speculative info) Store bought feeders are hosts for many parasites and may harm your fish.

Now, we so often assume the tank you currently have them in will house them for life. So bearing that assumption in mind, those fish will not live a happy life in a 55. So you may want to upgrade soon. I am no expert on these fish so I was hoping someone else would chime in, but I have given you what I can
 
Consider switching them over to a diet of pellets, silversides, fish flesh, and raw white shrimp. It's safer and healthier than using nothing but live feeders. For the least risk to your fish, I'd recommend doing away with the feeder fish altogether. RBPs aren't picky, and you should have an easy time converting them over to dead and prepared foods.

Personally, I wouldn't feed them mice. That would make quite the mess.

Everything else I agree with. Besides the fat content of a rat\mouse, the hair clogs your filters pretty fast. I've seen it and it's not a smart idea. Fat head minnows make great feeders for RBPs. Mine eats everything from floating and sinking pellets, frozen foods, cetain veggies, earthworms. They are like garbage disposals, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting them to eat frozen\non-meat foods.
 
Live fish or animals

I had these monsters for a while, they are fun to watch. I would not feed them live anything including fish, it's a good way of speading parasites to your fish. As far as mice, I would not do that for the mess it would create, man what a mess...I can't even imagine. :shark:
