pirahna

I'd be wary of even putting one Pacu in a 55G tank. They can get 24" in length and weigh up to 60 pounds (from what I've heard around he web) so...I'm thinking a 55G wouldn't be able to hold one. Not sure about other states but in Virginia Piranha are illegal. Minnesota may also be moving a law into effect after a 8 year old kid pulled a Piranha out of a local river this summer.

I've seen a Pacu that was easily that big, if not larger. he was in a 1000 gallon tropical pond. He was about as wide as a basketball, about 2 ft tall and about 2 ft long as well.. plus a tail.

there's a picture of an average sized one on this webpage: I dont know what language it's in... but it's the second picture from the top. http://www.fishing-khaolak.com/freshwater_fishing/phuket_dk.html

here's another good pic i found:

The one i saw was really cool.. he had teeth like people! it looked like he had stolen someone's dentures haha!

what about silver dollars.. they're kinda the same shape.. and they stay a little bit smaller. (still not small, but smaller than piranhas and pacus)

I am also interested in getting some piranhas but, am having a lot of trouble finding a distributor. Have any suggestions?

Black pirahna

I have a black pirahna he is about 5-6 inches long. he started out about the size of a qaurter in a 45 gallon hex. He is now in a 55. Looking to get rid of him. Just want to change the scenery. I have my eye on a tiger musky.

red hook silver dollars would be a better choice than red bellied p's.

What do you mean about the silver dollars? Tank size? The musky is about 3 inches long And I understand that in a year or so he will need a much bigger tank.

Pirahna's

I would say that would be fine as baby's but you will have to upgrade your tank size within a year. If not sooner unless they whittle them selfs down on there own. It has happened to me with red belly's before. Last red belly's I had started out with 10 within a year was down to 4. In a 55gln I have a black pirahna now in a 55 when I got him a few years ago he was the size of a qaurter. I attached a recent pic. If you don't want to worry about a bigger tank for awhile I would maybe just get a pair of them they should be good for a long time in a 55. Would'nt keep any pirahna in anything smaller for any amount of time.:headbang2:

red hooks look kinda like pirahna, stay smaller, and are more peaceful. with good water maintenance, you could probably have a school of 6 or so in a 55g.
