piranhas gars oddballs o my

i will eventually upgrade to a pond if need be

It gets pretty **** cold in Illinois in the winter, how do you intend to keep the pond heated?

ok I have never had any experiance with any of these fish but you will need a pretty big tank for all of them. have you reasearched them? its always good to research them and then if you are still unsure pst here :) and more info on the tank helps aswell. good luck!

+1 to the three posts above.

Pretty sure you are going to need to pick 1 species from that list and stick with it. And then multiply the tank size by 2x-3x depending on what you pick (unless you pick the Oscar, then you are fine as is). We'll assume at this point that by "alligator gar" you mean a smaller variety of gar, since even a pond would be small for a real gator gar.

i will upgrade periodically. but i'm starting out with them all under 6 inches in a 75 gallon tank. i live in Illinois so they are legal.

I would advise not to get these fish. You would probably be ok with an Oscar in the 75g.

Don't get anything. Most of the people that say they will upgrade to a bigger tank never do.

hi i was wondering if the following could get along in my tank

1 silver arowanna
1 alligator gar
1 piranaha
1 oscar
thanks

1 silver arowanna and 1 red belly piranha

In the 75 ? Nah. You'd be starting the aro small yes ? The piranha will nip it. And piranha should be kept in schools.

Arowanna grow extremely fast up to a foot and a half or so, then top out at somewhere around 3 feet in most adequate home tanks. The 75 won't do for it for that long.

There's a lot of material on aros on www.monsterfishkeepers.com which you should go read. A lot of people put a 240 Gallon tank as a absolute bare minimum for one aro. A lot of people insist on a tank at least as wide as the fish is long so you are looking at a 3 foot wide tank of adequate length - 6 to 8 feet - on those specs.

The amount of people who get a specimen like this (which in my opinion is totally unsuited to the average home aquarium set up - you really need something special) intending to size up the tank and never do, resulting in an unhealthy and eventually dead fish, could not be counted.

Can I ask what your living circumstances are ? Have you space for a tank that size ? Can your building accommodate it ? Are you aware that the longest recorded lifespan for this animal in an aquarium is 40 years ? And that 20 years is not uncommon, when kept correctly. Are you happy to base all your decisions about your living arrangements to accommodate this tank for that period of time ?

Have you really thought this through ?

i have done a lot of research. i asked if they could get along i didn't ask what size tank i need. i can accommodate a very very large tank and can build my own .i know people who have experience building tanks as well. so please if you reply stick to the question

NO first off how big is your tank, Piranha are natural schooling fish that need to be kept in schools of 5 or more. To small of a school and they will kill each other. Arowanna need a tank of at least 200 gallons.
