Pit Bull rant

well, i will only put this down on here once and again i will then leave this thread alone ..people who think any breed of dog can be more viciuos are narrow minded biggots ..i have personally been atacked by a chocolate lab, i also own two american staffordhire terriers and i have two small children ,,,the difference between my dog and the dog that this post was origannly posted about ...is not the dog in and of itself, its the owner ,,,i am a responsible pet owner and my dogs are not allowed to roam free without a leash unless they are on private property which in any case is just that private ...you can not condemn any one breed or species on one incedent ..my dog was attacked by a rotty and the only reason he survived was because he was so obediant and would not fight. if you judged the whole caucasion race by one man ..jeffery dahmer for instance ...would you outlaw all white males..our how about afro americans ...the dc snyper ..hmmm lets out law all black men then and lets see ...indians ...the 9-11 terrorists ...lets outlaw all but the american indians ..oh wait i am sure they have done something to ....i speak for all responsible pit owners when i say that yes we take precation around our dogs because, we are intellegant ..and odnt think for one minute its because its a pit bull, its because its a dog ..and no matter what breed they all are capable of doing serios damage ...one of my best friends was attacked by a chiuaa and guess what she has severel scars and is blind in one eye has had 13 surgeries ...all because ..the dog wanted a tug rope ..size shape breed doesnt matter we are dealing with a creature that was once wild and still caries those tendencies ...any one who assumes its just one breed will be the next big news story going i cant belive a cocker and yes i said cocker ..has killed my son ...he never acted that way before.
while i do feel sorry for you ..and hope your dog is well ...its people like you who are ranting about a pit bull ..that make it near imposible for people like me to own one, please next time you chose to post something like this blame the dogs idiot owners ..mot the dog ..i know hes the one who attacked your dog ..but his owners allowed it and that is much worse ..a more apt title would have been ..idiot dog owners .

Children and dogs, plain and simple, teach them not to approach a dog they don't know. Heck, even a dog they do know, but there's no adult around. Believe me, I know it's hard, I'm still working on my kids. Teach them to ask the owner. They should know to never approach a stray dog, or a leashed dog in another person's yard, without an adult with them.

I've nothing else to say about the 'pit' thing, because it's been said on two other threads. Dog attacks happen from any breed.

But Sally, I am glad you are okay, and that no children were hurt.

Lila is right...children should be taught not to go up to a strange dog. I have a hard time remembering this myself. We went to pick up my daughters car after a wreck from the tow yard. The guy had a St Bernard and I start to pet and make a fuss over the dog...until I heard the low growl. I backed off right away and was thankful the dog growled to warn me.
I'm a fool for boxers and make a fuss over them when I see them and have never been growled at, but in reality..you should ask the owner if you can pet the dog before you do.

It is an individual thing from dog to dog. You shouldn't assume that becasue your or your friends lab is a great dog that all labs (or any other breed) is a good dog. And you can't assume because there are bad pitts that all are bad. It is the person handling the dog's responsiblity to know their dog and handle them in a responsible manner. The people who do not should be the ones to pay the price, not the responsible owners. If I know I have a dog with issues with small children, it's my responsibility to keep him out of those situations.

By profiling a breed as "bad" and outlawing it you give the false impression that the other breeds are "ok". That is the dangerous part of outlawing a certain breed.
The other is that it's a slippery slope...pretty soon it will be rottweillers, and then dobermans..boxers...any breed that someone had a grudge against. All anyone will be able to own will be a teacup poodle.

Fundamentally, it should be the owners butt on the line when a dog (any dog) bites someone. The dog is not usually at fault for aggression or just poor training.

However, if you make a habit of arresting the owners for their dogs behavior, you can not always be sure that perhaps this certain dog had some inherent mental issue that could not have been avoided.

I will agree there is bad breeding, you get these people just willy-nilly crossing this dog and that dog and not taking temperment and betterment of breed characteristics into account, and you definitely have people breeding for agressive tendancies. That is what should be targeted, the behaviors of the humans involved.
Dog fighting should be outlawed.

I second Nursie's first post. I have seen vicious chihuahas. I have seen very vicious dobermans. I have seen vicious cats. I have seen vicious pit bulls. I have seen vicious people. And I have seen friendly versions of all these things.

Proper training and obedience lessons, or the lack thereof, are the most determinant factor in a dog's aggression (unless the dog is diseased or something).

A family friend had a pitbull when i was a child and I would play with him all the time - he was extremely gentle.

Of course, my sister has a scar on her eyebrow from where a psycho terrier bit her in the face while she was at a friends house.

EDIT: And, for the record, my mother is terrified by dalmations because the local firehouse dalmation mauled her as a child. She also had to go to the hospital because of a german shephard bite to the hand (granted, that was sort of her fault - because she was trying to save our weimeranner's life since the shep was attacking it so badly).

Dang... now i have to share this story.
When I was 7 years old my friend slept over at my house and my mom had a cocker spaniel dog. I was in bathroom when my friend tried to pet the dog and the dog bit her in face. Now she has scar just above her lips to this day. Now lets ban cocker spaniel?!?! Puhlease.
We got to look behind the dog's lifestyle, its personality, breeding and all of that stuff. Basically, its owners responsbility to train the dog. Unfortnately the dog got nervous that I wasn't around when my friend wanted to pet the dog.
I'm always wary around different dogs, got to read their body language although I love them but I got to respect their space. If I had a dog that I find diffcult and dangerous to work with I would put it down for my own good and public's good.

I will say this, regardless of a dog's breed, if they are dog aggressive or people aggressive, I personally don't think that they should be allowed out in public with a stupid owner. Everyone says that we should teach our kids how to react to a dog and that's true, but oh come on, children are forgetful and impulsive. If my kid got mauled because he swung his arm wrong and scared the dog then yes it's my kids fault but that does not make it okay that he hurt my kid. There are certain things that a person needs to do when the dog is a puppy to socialize them with people and other dogs. If the dog can't be around people and other dogs without the dog being a risk then I personally don't think that anyone should own that dog. There's always a risk that the dog will hurt someone and by gosh if my kids got attacked, that owner better look out. What really sucks though, is that the damage cannot be undone. If my kid is killed or maimed, there is nothing to make it all better. What pisses me off is that ultimately, there's not much that I can do about other people's dogs. All I can do is try to protect my kids but that may not be good enough. Kids are killed and injured all the time by dogs and it's senseless.

Pit Bulls can easily kill you and Cockers... well can't! Labont (Sp?) even admits his pit can't be out with other dogs and little kids in a park.
All three of us kids were attacked by pits as kids and sent to the emergecy room. I still have a chunck out of my butt  My husband's stupid Schnauzer bit me and I just had a bad cut. Big diff!

I dont admit and never said they cant be with kids. However they would not be alone with kids. They can be aggressive towards other dogs though especially if the other dog is in any way aggressive or showing any behaviour that may seem aggressive. Anyways I am staying out of this topic as I dont need to get into another rediculous arguement over it. I have said my piece about them many times. The bottom line is yes there should be rules but they shouldnt be banned. This will be the only thing I will say in this topic as within the first page i have already read some pretty un-educated posts. I will not even bother to read any further. If you dont like Pit-Bulls that fine but dont try and force it on others by badmouthing them and trying to have them banned.
