I was at softball Friday night and of course I took Jack, my Min Pin, as I always do to my sports activities. There were many small children entertaining themselves by playing with Jack. Jack was being good with the children and of course tied to the fence on his leash right by our dugout.

The minute I turn my back to talk to someone, along comes this vicious pit bull off leash with no collar and he goes after Jack. Thank goodness Jack was fast and able somehow to avoid the pit's bites and attacks. The people that owned the pit were finally able to pull him off by the time I was able to get on the scene, but they could not keep ahold of him or get the makeshift least on him.. they had absolutely no control of this dog.
My dog is just fine, but it blows my mind someone would bring a vicious dog around into a family area with so many small children and other peoples' pets. What were they thinking!!!! :mad2:

My dog was bred to hunt and kill rats, which he does quite proficiently. I never had to train him to do this.

Pits are bred for their meaness and ability to attack and not let go. Please, I know some of you will talk all day about how nice your pit is with people, but people who have pits need to be extra care with them around other people's dogs and children.

I don't care what kind of dog it is, that dog should have had a leash!! and if the case was that he got off the leash, it should have still be accessible to the owner. Sorry about the fright S4lly.

Ontario is in teh precess of laying down laws that says " NO PITS OF ANY KIND" The new law says....

If you have one, it must be mussled, and leashed at all tiems in public.

And

No new pits are to be sold, bred, or brought into Ontario.

This may seem harsh, but the pitbull line has been altered from what it was ment to me. Becauseof bad owners and careless training and breadding of these animals. They are banned in Ontario, rightfully so.

Anyway, My cockapoo is a great dog. I will mis him when i move to college. Along with the three horses. But thaksfully ALL my tanks are going with me to dorm :)

The problem was the owners and their inappropriate behavior in not having the dog leashed or properly trained on how to behave in public..and that particular dog, not pitties in general.
If there are leash laws in your community, these people could be fined for their reckless behavior.

I have boxers, who people confuse with pits sometimes, and the thought that my dogs are automatically thought of as vicious killers because of what they look like or what breed they are is foolish.
I've been bitten by scotties and pekapoos...not any so called bully breed dogs.

I don't understand banning a certain breed of dog. ANy dog can be turned bad by ill treatment. Pitties can be wonderful dogs, and like any high energy dog they need training and socialization to behave proberly. Are they going to start banning Rottwillers and Boxers next? They need to target the people that are breeding these dogs poorly and training them..and other breeds you can be sure..to fight. Target the real problem...the people responsible. Dog fighting needs to be outlawed...while you're at it outlaw greyhound racing. That is a cruel and inhumane business.

Check back a page or two and you'll get everyones opinion on pits :) !! There was a VERY long thread about them just before the power went out!! I'll just say that I'm sorry for any dog who is behaving and gets attacked

You are right Holly. Labont and Flyfly both have pits. Both are big marshmallows from what I understand.

As i mentioned, Ontario has the pitbull law. BUT this does not only include pitbulls....

Under the amendments to DOLA, pit bull is defined as:

* A pit bull terrier
* A Staffordshire bull terrier
* An American Staffordshire terrier
* An American pit bull terrier
* A dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics substantially similar to any of those dogs

Information on The Dog Owners' Liability Act and Public Safety Related to Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act, 2005

Check this link out for Ontario Information. It is interesting

Does any remember the "Lil Rascals" cartoon? Petey the dog was a pit bull. As far as the original purpose of pits, they were bred for the ring and to be aggresive toward other animals and especially dogs. It is a new development for them to be bred for aggression towards people.

Any breed can be misbred or mishandled. I've enountered som cocker spanials that were completely out of control and vicious snappers. That happened when the breed was at its hieght of popularity and everybody thought they would make a mint breeding anything that even looked like a cocker.

Laws against breeds are getting out of control. Check with your homeowner's insurance agent. Many companies will not insure you unless you exclude your dog from the policy. This covers not only dogs that may resemble them like the above post. It includes German Shepherd Dogs and many breeds that look like them.

With the popularity of Labs in America, many of them are now being misbred as well. How long before they make the list? Sooner or later we may reach the point were only toothless toy dogs are allowed.

" In News today, the Neon Tetra fish had been banned from North america for it agressive behaviour. Fish activits everyhwere are speaking out"

LOL This is what i just might come to one day. And i will laugh on that day.

Pit Bulls can easily kill you and Cockers... well can't! Labont (Sp?) even admits his pit can't be out with other dogs and little kids in a park.
