Hi folks-

I recently found a deal that I couldn't refuse- a 46gal. bowfront w/ stand, glass hood w/ 2 30w. flours. tubes, and Eheim classic 2213 for $130. It was only used for about a month until the original owner, "killed about $1000 worth of fish" as he put it. Too bad he didn't know about this forum.

Anyway, a couple of questions-

Can I re-use the filter media that has been sitting wet for a long period of time or should I scrap it?

I guess I should get a protein skimmer- should I also get a seperate internal pump just for better water circulation?

I have a successful 20 gal. FW system, thanks in part to the help I have received on these forums. Over a year and I haven't lost any fish! So I look forward to any help you all can offer.
Thanks Again ahead of time-

The first question that comes to mind is what killed all the fish?

If it was me I would spare myself the worry of something not being right with the filters and just chuck it all and go a new. The pro's definately outweigh the cons in this one i think.

good deal though, I really like the bow fronts..

The guy went to a PET store (not a real LFS) saw a beautiful aquarium, and said, "I want that setup!" I think all his fish died because these people were more interested in taking his money than helping the guy start a healthy aquarium.

It is a shame when that happens...Stupid thing is, it happens all to often when they see some-one who has come in to buy a new setup who has not got a clue, the person just gets off-loaded by the shop as they just see $ signs before their eyes..

Anyway, back to your thread Jan..Make sure you give everything a ruddy good scrub with water and vinegar..Replace all media in anything that has it..Dont bother with the filter if you are buying enough live rock and sand for the tank ( 1 - 1.5lbs per gallon of live rock ) as the live rock and sand will provide your filtration for the tank..

Buy a couple of good powerheads for the circulation, get a skimmer that is rated about twice your tank capacity..so, in other words, buy a skimmer that is rated for 90 or 100 gallons...

If it's Eheim substrate, I wouldn't replace it. Just keep rinsing it w/ tap water 'till it runs clear, then refill canister w/ treated water.

Further answers depend on your plans (FOWLR, reef etc.). The eheim may be better suited to your existing FW tank...

Yes, that's it exactly, it's how all pet stores stay in business, by screwing everyone... perhaps the guy didn't really care what the fish store told him, i've found people will do things when they want and how they want, regardless of what is right or what the LFS tells someone.

Thanks for the responses, but if I may clarify- I plan on having a good skimmer and enough live rock and sand, so is the Eheim cannister filter of no use? will it just be a nitrAte factory?
Would it do any good to just pull the media out and use it for circulation?
thanks again!!
