hey guys, what can you tell me about the bulbs that come in the small packs from wal-mart? I'm not talking about lightbulbs. the plants that start off as bulbs. when I had my old setup, i bought some, and all i could ever get was one stalk that grew up to the top of the aquarium, and then had only one leaf... anyway, i was there the other day and saw 2 different kinds, I THINK they were water lillies, and anub-somethings... i just don't remember anything else at all because at the time i was stressed and just trying to pass the time while waiting for someone. i read the package, and it said just to drop the bulbs into the water, and let them sink on their own, and they will grow to so many inches tall in 20 to 30 days. will these plants ever spread throughout the tank? or is it just one plant per bulb? i want to know this because there's only 2 bulbs in the water lilly package, and 6 in the other. I hope i can get an answer soon because i may stop by after work and get one of each.

Well, I am not an expert on plants, but I did buy one of those plant bulb deals from Walmart. The kind I bought were the hybrid Aponogeton, and after dropping them in my 55g, I had 2 out of the 7 bulbs grow(after there was growth on the bulbs, I did bury them in the substrate). I have had mine growing now for about 4 weeks. Each bulb has about 8-10 leaves each. The one bulb grew two stalks with small flowers on the ends-they even came out of the water. After 3 days the flowers died and I removed the stalks. The plants seem to be growing fine IMO.

yeah, sorry, it was aponogeton, like you say. the reason i was asking about the plants spreading, i don't want to buy 10 packs of these things just so my tank can look as good as some of the ones i've seen... i'm gonna try these again, and a little later on, venture off into the potted plants... I'll post pics for an ID when i get to that point..

These are the only plants that grow for me.. I'm not a huge plant person but I like having something help with the nitrates in the tank and these fit the bill just perfect. They make a great low light plant.

i think the general experience is hit or miss, if you get good bulbs they grow ok but they aren't always good bulbs.

the bulbs I got from wallyworld are guaranteed to grow ..send them to the mfg and they will send you new ones.
on to the plants some are a lily others aponogeton..now I heard the latter do not propagate
one of the plants I got looked like it was flowering..I pinched it back and a new runner came up..I missed it and discovered a small bulb with leaves(much like a sword) a few weeks later.

it is aquatic and has been in my tank for over 1 yr.

the new plantling is growing now too..??

I'm not sure if anyone else has done this but I think those walmart bulbs are great!! Just try to buy the pack with the most bulbs. even if you only have 10-20% hatch, read the back of the package!!! Any bulbs that don't sprout stick them in an envelope and send them back to the company. A few days later they send you the same number back with some that are presprouted. Drop those in and presto! Just remeber to save your receipt! goodluck guys
