Can you use pond plant fertilisers in aquaria? They seem to be a lot cheaper per dose.

Karl "Faramir" Cheapskate....

I'll be following this one closely... I told my wife once that I was frugal, she told me "no, your cheap, there's a difference". Could be my north Brittian heritage. Incedently, did you know that copper wire was invented by two Scots arguing over a penny? :D

I have used some in my tanks, but with no real results. Just more ammonia and nitrite. If you want to get your plants to grow larger, buy a Co2 injection system or you can bulid one yourself. Inscructions are here.

s_lionheart_13 or anyone do you know of any sites with a picture of this DIY CO2 Injection .I have never use this in any of my years of fish keeping and am thinking of doings so.Please let me know thanks.

Hey, Rockhead! (sorry, but I couldn’t resist)

Although I haven’t actually seen one, I believe all you do is take the business end of a gravel vac, hang it in your tank with the open end down, and let the CO2 bubble up into it. Then, you use a powerhead on the other end, running it in reverse to push water down through the tube.

What you end up with is a big tube hanging upside down in your tank. All the time. Every day.

Needless to say, I lean toward the external reactor - no clutter in the tank. But for that, I would shell out the bucks, because if it leaks...

I have one and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to seriously dose CO2.

Good luck - I’ll keep an eye out to see how it turns out for you.

rockhead, here is a photo of someone's system (It is rater messy looking; I recommend having your tank sitting on top of a stand with cabnets below to conceal the system).

Also, when it comes to reactors, I don't even use one. I just use my airstone. While it is inefficient, it is still enough to get my plants to grow much faster.
